Dear Friend,
Why do you do the things you do? If you are like most people, your answer is simple. You do them because you want to. Or you have to. Or because you wanted a specific benefit. But according to some of the most advanced experiments in neuroscience, these answers are wrong.
Seriously?
Humans have this idea about the relationship between our thoughts and our actions. We believe our thoughts come before our actions. And that these thoughts are conscious, and under our control. But according science (not science fiction!) that is not really true.
Order Of Operations
There’s a lot that goes into basic human behavior. We think that we see something happening, we think about it, we make a plan, we decide what to do, and then we do it. But that is wrong. What really happens is a bit more confusing.
Ancient Humans
It’s generally understood that humans and chimps split from a common ancestor about six or eight million years ago. And we slowly changed over those millions of years into who we are. Now, whether this was driven by divine guidance or random evolution is anybody’s guess. But what is certain is that our conscious, rational, self-aware brains only are a very recent development.
Tons Of Instincts
We humans have a ton of instincts. We also have a ton of learning capability. In fact, you might even say that our learning ability is a meta-instinct, a technique to help us learn new instincts. One of the reasons was that we are born way before are brains are fully finished.
Walking, talking, these are instincts, but we have to practice them for a while before we can do them without thinking. Other things like using tools and developing new skills are also things we can learn until they become instinctive.
Thinking Is Energy Intensive
Even today, we don’t like to think. We are driven to find auto pilot solutions. We do things because we’ve done them before. We the same brands most of our lives. Watch the same types of TV shows, eat the same type of food.
Most Behavior Is Outside Conscious Awareness
Most of our behavior is driven by unconscious responses. Since our brains are so energy intensive, we’ve developed a ton of strategies to help minimize brain power. Many of the things we think we see in the world around us are actually internally generated images.
Just like your browser uses cached images instead rendering them over and over again, our brains stores tons of images so we don’t have to use all that valuable brain power to process the massive amount of visual data that bombards us every second.
Shortcuts In Thinking
We have a lot of triggers that help us make decisions. Dr. Cialdini beautifully described this in his work on persuasion and influence. Common words like authority, social proof, scarcity, etc. were a result of his research.
But the thing is that these aren’t just there some of the time, in some situations. These external triggers are there almost all of the time, in every situation.
Content Is Irrelevant
When thinking about what we do and why we do it, we silly humans always think the content is the main reason why we do things. We buy the new iPhone because it’s got all the features we really want. Or that we think we want.
We believe the things we believe because we actually reasoned out and looked at all the data and came to our own conclusions, not because the authority figure on TV made it sound so believable.
Very Little Rational Thinking
Unfortunately, most of the time, we give the content very little, if any, thought. Things like authority, social proof, halo affect, and other triggers drive nearly all of our behaviors. This is something that is easy to see in others, but very hard to admit to ourselves.
Combinations Of Authority And Social Proof
Just these two ancient triggers, once helpful in keeping together tribes of ancient people, can be used to drive entire countries insane.
Asch Experiment
This showed that when we are surrounded by social peers that purposely choose the wrong answer to a simple question, so will we. Even if the question takes less than a second to answer when we are alone, we will give the wrong answer if it means going along with the crowd.
Milgram Experiment
This shows that when some guy in a lab coat tells us to do something, we’ll do it. Even if it means shocking some poor guy who’s begging us to stop.
Deadly Combinations
You add these two together, authority and social proof, and it is extremely hard for us silly humans to think our own thoughts. This is not easy to admit. This is not easy to even contemplate. Unfortunately it is absolutely true.
The Real Matrix
The matrix isn’t a fictional computer simulation that we are trapped in. It is the collection of these ancient triggers. They are more powerful and influential to our moment-to-moment thinking than our very recently developed conscious minds. And the sad part? Most people will never know the extent of their power over us.
How To Escape
The good news is there are ways to escape. Not escape literally, like unplugging and living in a secret cave underground, but to slowly shift away from these ancient triggers and start to control your own thinking.
The Cult Experience
If you study the most horrible death cults ever, they all centered around a very insidious combination of all these factors. A charismatic authority. The social proof of like minded followers, all with the same problems, desires and dreams. The irresistible power of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) build in to the cult’s existence.
The Time Wasting Experience
Luckily, very few of us will end up in a death cult. But most of us will waste precious time, energy and money being led astray. We do things because they seem so natural. They have the same powers of authority and social proof. The more we participate, the bigger the trigger of commitment and consistency gets.
The Horror Of A Half Lived Life
The sad truth of most humans is we shuffle along, too scared to break from the pack and think for ourselves. To worried about what people will think of us if we voice an opinion that is different than the socially approved ones. If we have beliefs that are not the same as those authorities on TV. Those alleged holders of knowledge.
Most people will end their lives not having accomplished much. This is the sum total of following the crowd. Of being too worried to follow your own opinion. Of playing it safe. Of letting the crowd and the authority figures do your thinking for you.
Step By Step Process
In this guide you’ll learn to slowly, safely and rationally check your own thoughts. Carefully put your own behaviors under a microscope. To gradually and safely separate these matrix triggers from your actions.
