There they are, not quite ready to make a decision, and some goof they don’t know tries to talk them into spending their money.

This is why nearly all salespeople use the hard sell. Convincing the person who is thinking about buying to become a buyer. This involves things like overcoming objections. Closing strategies. Clever language patterns.
 

Leading A Horse To Water

They say you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Meaning you can physically move horse right next to a bucket of water, but you can’t force the horse to move his mouth and throat and everything else needed.
 
Sales is like this. You can show the customer the product. You can show him all the features and benefits. You can spend tons of energy and charisma and other techniques to paint as lovely a picture as you can of the product. But he won’t buy unless he wants to buy.

If he decides to buy, it’s gotta be his decision. This is where it gets sticky. If you happen to be gorgeous, if you’ve got so much charisma he’ll beg to do what you say, then it’s easy. But most people aren’t gorgeous. Most people don’t have a lot of energy. This is exactly why even the best sales people have closing percentages down around 10%.
 

One Out OF Ten

This means they try nine times and fail for every sale they make. Even if you make six figures, these kinds of numbers don’t feel good. Getting told nine times out of ten that they don’t want to do what you are suggesting doesn’t feel good no matter how much money you make.

This is why many people used to be in sales. Even the ones that made good livings. Many ex-salesmen took less money so they didn’t have to get rejected all day long.
