Know Thyself
Carl Jung famously said that unless you “make the unconscious conscious, it will run your life and you will call it fate.”
What does this mean?
It’s very easy for us humans to believe that many aspects of our life are out of our control.
His theory that we are driven by things that live in our subconscious.
A more modern version could mean:
“Unless we understand and manage our instincts, our lives will be a train wreck.”
Our instincts compel us to do things.
Eat food, run away from danger, stay warm, become attracted to others, etc.
This is because it took a long time to become “self aware” humans.
And before we had self awareness, we just did what our instincts told us.
That worked in an ancient environment.
The ego was and is the most powerful instinct.
Control Center
The one that supported all the rest.
The one that drove each of us to PROVE we were better than everybody else.
But not better in the abstract.
Better at providing food.
Better at keeping everybody safe.
Better at finding safe places to sleep.
Or, a better leader of others.
A good leader keeps everybody safe and happy and motivated.
A bad leader doesn’t.
But like all our other instincts, our ego runs unchecked today.
That’s OK.
Self Domesticating
One trait of a modern society is the domestication of animals.
To leverage the traits of the animals to benefit us humans.
The animals do work to support humans, and they get a safe place to live and plenty of food in exchange.
Humans can “domesticate” other humans.
Humans can “domesticate” ourselves.
We’ve been doing this since the dawn of time.
The most powerful force of human nature is the ego.
This means the ego is the useful trait to train others.
Women have been doing this to men since the dawn of time.
To low key persuade them to become better hunters.
The guy gets to be king, and the low key persuasive wife gets to be queen.
She persuades him to be the biggest killer.
Driven To Be King
He gets the highest status.
She gets the highest status because of him.
He’s the King, she’s the Queen.
Leveraging the ego of others is far simpler than many believe.
It’s all about how the questions you ask them, and let them run free with their answers.
It’s all about how you keep your ego at a minimum, while allowing theirs the temporary spotlight.
Play the long game, and they’ll end up doing whatever you want.
