Humans have what can be called an “externalizing instinct.”
Because this is an instinct, it operates at the subconscious level.
Just like hunger, it’s not rational.
You can’t choose to be hungry.
You can’t choose to be not hungry.
Similar to social signals, both positive and negative.
If you slip and fall in a very public way, and every laughs you can’t choose to not feel like crap.
Similarly, if you give a rousing speech and get a standing ovation, you can’t choose to feel good.
These things happen naturally and automatically.
So, what is an externalizing instinct?
We tend to blame things outside of ourselves for our failures.
This is absolutely NOT rational.
This happens automatically.
Imagine two ancient hunters.
One had the externalizing instinct, the other did not.
They both throw their spears at a deer.
They both miss.
The guy WITHOUT the externalizing instinct takes responsibility.
“Maybe I need to practice my spear throwing or something…”
But the guy WITH the externalizing extinct blames the deer.
He gets ANGRY at the deer.
This anger makes him chase the deer.
To punish it for moving.
This means he has a chance of getting some food.
The other guy does not.
Which means in the ancient world, blaming the world for your failures is a USEFUL strategy.
It gave you anger-energy to extract FROM the world what you needed to survive.
But today, that instinct messes us up.
Especially if we’ve been wronged.
It creates anger at something in a way we CANNOT express.
Which ends up making us feel trapped, and stuck.
This DOES NOT HELP us.
It keeps us from getting what we want.
Money, love, sex, recognition, status.
To truly and congruently go after these things, we need to RELEASE any anger at those who wronged us.

They don’t need to know.
They don’t need to care.
This is a PURELY selfish act.
After all, they do say that success is the best revenge.
Set yourself free from the past and dominate.
