Studying Studying
There was this professor of education who unexpectedly got a grant to study various memory techniques.
They made a decimal point error, so he got ten times as much money as he was expecting.
So he decided to go all out and research as my potential study techniques as possible.
And very much like modern medicine, he wanted to check as many things of his list as possible.
Find The Most Interesting
What he was really after was to statistically demonstrate significant increases in memory through the weirdest way possible.
He figured that would be the key to his future fame.
The first test was to compare students on the ground studying new material to students studying in a hot air balloon.
What Does This Really Mean?
I have this one friend who is an associate professor of abstract metaphors, specializing in biblical texts.
Right now he’s trying to figure out the deeper meaning of the famous battle between David and Goliath.
His contention is the true metaphorical meaning is not the little guy prevailing over the big guy as commonly thought.
Double Layer Inductions
There is this psychologist who uses hypnosis, but he’s a very clever prankster.
He’ll hypnotize people a couple layers deep.
So he’ll bring them out of the lowest layer, and they’ll think they are back to normal, but their still trapped in a hypnotic trance.
He wanted to create the double layer dreaming effect.
Which Dream Are You In
Where you’re having a dream now, but then you wake up, and you think this dream is over.
Only to realize that you’re still dreaming, now.
Once there was a young boy.
He went on a cruise with his parents.
I Thought This Was Going To Be Fun
What he didn’t know what that his parents had been assigned to go on this cruise by their marriage counselor.
Which meant they were always arguing.
The boy started to wander around and the captain notice he was all alone and seemed sad.
After a some tangential questions he figured out what was what.
Wanna Drive?
So he brought him to the bridge to let him steer the boat.
He explained that even though the boat is on autopilot most of the time, it still needs maintenance.
And that the idea of autopilot is really a misnomer.
Everything that is on autopilot needs to be monitored carefully.
No Such Thing
That if you leave a boat on auto pilot but don’t continuously check it, you may end up in a bad place.
He said that’s what his parents were doing.
They thought they were on auto pilot but they really weren’t.
So now they had to change course.
And after they changed course, they had to do a little bit of work every day to stay on course.
He l ooked at him and said:
Listen Up Kid
Most people don’t understand this, so it’s your job to check.
It’s your job to watch out and make sure they stay on course.
Frequently he would wake people up and tell them the hypnosis session was over.
Then he’d give them an ink blot test.
But since they were still in a state of hypnosis, the ink blots would start moving around and replicating the thoughts that exist in your mind.
Describing Thoughts
Because the thoughts in your mind are a much more accurate description than your description of those thoughts.
Then they’d finally wake up an forget this.
He’d look at them and say:
You don’t remember any of this.
You don’t even understand what I was talking about before.
You can just let those vague memories sink to the bottom of your mind, where they can relax, now.
All The Way Down
Very comfortably, very calmly, very soothingly, very absent mindedly, very forgetfully.
And drift off into an even deeper sleep, now, than you’ve ever felt before.
The secret is that of angular velocity.
That’s a metaphor for the most powerful thinking process.
Moral Brain Hazard
That since ancient times, humans had to rely only on their brains.
And if you think angularly instead of linearly, you can create much more speed of thought.
This is what the story of David vs. Goliath is all about.
That angular thinking will defeat linear thinking all day long.
This Is The One
He eventually did find a very high correlation.
That if you study while in the fight or flight mode, your brain will be much more capable of remembering pretty much everything.
That’s why if you die in a car crash you’ll remember it happening much more slowly than it really did.
It’s not that time is moving more slowly, your brain is moving more quickly.
The safest way to study under a state of fight or flight is to study while bungee jumping.
Or you could go to the zoo, and have your friend make threatening gestures to a gorilla, so he’ll keep smashing into the window while you study for your algebra test.
That usually does the trick.
