Stuck Underwater
I’ve always been a fan of Harry Houdini, the famous escape artist.
There was a movie about him I’d seen as a kid, a whole bunch of times.
He was put into a safe, and dropped into a frozen river.
He escaped from the safe, but missed the hole in the ice when he came up.
So he breathed from the bubbles under the ice.
His death is shrouded in mystery.
Allegedly, he made a claim that he could resist a punch to the stomach.
Some dude showed up, ask him if this was true.
Houdini allegedly said yes, and then the dude hit him several times in the gut.
The problem was Houdini didn’t have time to prepare.
And this is rumored to be the thing that actually killed him.
He died from a ruptured appendix, and many believe this was the cause.
Getting unexpectedly punched in the gut a bunch of times.
Getting sucker punched is similar.
You don’t know the dude is about to hit you.
So you don’t have time to get ready.
This is how even highly trained martial artists can get ambushed.
Sneak up behind them, wallop them in the side of the head, and they go down.
Sucker Punch
Very few martial artists would have their guard up while hanging with close friends.
Linguistic sucker punches are similar.
Quick and vicious underhanded insults.
But these CAN be much easier to defend against.
For somebody to sucker punch you, they need to be secret.
Sneak up behind you.
But for linguistic sucker punches, they are always telegraphed.
Which means you can prepare against them.
By practicing noticing people’s energy.
With just a little bit of practice, you can see when people are getting an insult ready.
Most people will never know how to do this.
But you can, with practice.
So by the time they’ve decided to insult, you’ll already be ready.
And you can simply relax and let it come.
That’s when the fun starts.
Um, What?
Since the insulter is expecting a kind of sucker punch effect, they won’t have planned any follow ups.
So when you calmly absorb the insult without reacting, they won’t know what to do.
Particularly fun is when you start to calmly ask questions about the insult itself.
For them to explain it in more detail.
To ask them why they think it’s true.
Or why they think it’s valid.
This will make them look like an absolute moron.
And you like an absolute hero.
