I went to this bar a few weeks ago with a friend of mine. It was one of those bar / restaurant type places.
The bar section was pretty small. As soon as we walked in, I noticed there were “Corona Beer” flags EVERYWHERE. Pretty much every square inch of the spare wall space was covered.
We looked at the menu, and my friend ordered a Corona. He said it in complete seriousness, indicating that he hadn’t seen any of the signs.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
Our conscious minds are extremely limited. Some scientists reckon that we can only handle about 40 bits of information per second.
Unfortunately, our senses are being hit with about a million bits of information a second.
Our poor conscious minds don’t stand a chance!
Luckily, we’ve got an unconscious. That part of your brain that is busily paying attention to EVERYTHING, while you’re happily zoning out.
That way, in case something important pops up, your subconscious will give you some kind of signal that lets you know something’s up.
Like in my friend’s case, a mysterious desire for Corona beer.
Of course, to an outside observer, there is nothing mysterious about this.
If we’re not careful, those signals that are bypassing our conscious minds can end up making us choose things that are against our best interests.
Now in the example above, choosing a Corona over a Miller is no big deal, right?
But what happens if we choose something that we’ll later regret? Something that will cost us dearly?
While those advertisers are laughing all the way to the bank?
The truth is that ALL humans have a huge collection of automatic triggers and blind spots.
Not knowing what these are, and how they operate, can leave us open to manipulation.
But once you understand these triggers, where they come from, and even how to use them, you’ll have a HUGE advantage.
See, most people don’t even know these exist.
Which means that not only will you be able to resist manipulation and trickery, but you’ll be able to see exactly why people around you are doing what they are doing.
Giving you ability to help them choose more wisely.
More congruently.
So NOBODY gets taken advantage of.
