No Cave People
One of the hallmarks of civilization is not being a slave to your instincts.
This is pretty difficult today.
Particularly when everybody feels entitled to everything.
Everything right now and without any costs.
I’ve even read some people complaining on social media about the structure of life itself.
Like why life requires money.
Why can’t everything we want to free?
Why do things take time, and effort, and actual thinking?
Because we don’t live in magic land, that’s why.
All those things we use, other people need to make them.
They don’t all come streaming through a magic portal from the magic wish universe.
Food requires growing and processing.
Stuff requires putting other stuff together.
Patience is a virtue.
Resilience is a virtue.
Strategies
Or if you don’t like the word “virtue” think in terms of strategies.
People who tend to be more patient tend to do better than those who demand things RIGHT NOW.
People who are resilient, who can bounce back from losses or setbacks tend to do better than folks who give up and go home.
Thinking about how your actions today will impact your distant future is a very, very powerful skill.
But it’s not automatic.
Thinking ONLY in terms of right now is our go-to response, most of the time.
Developing a long game frame IS an acquired taste.
Imagine two ancient tribes of people.
Both are in the process of tracking and hopefully killing a wooly mammoth.
But there is one key difference.
One tribe is ONLY focused on right now.
In fact, they have an artificial belief that once they find and kill the wooly mammoth, all their problems are solved.
This next kill is somehow going to fix ALL of their problems.
Like I said, this can’t be true.
It is an absolutely false belief.
But it will motivate the CRAP out of this first tribe.
Next Big Thing
They’ll see the successful hunting as this wooly mammoth as the answer to all their prayers.
Now consider the second group.
They KNOW that killing that wooly mammoth will be pretty cool.
But they know they’ll be hungry again.
They know that they’ll be complainers and whiners back in the tribe.
“Jeez, couldn’t you guys have killed it closer to water?”
“We got to walk a half mile to get something to drink…sheesh…”
This is much more likely.
Much more accurate.
But the money questions, or mother nature, doesn’t care about accuracy.
She only cares about who can replicate the most.
Valuable False Beliefs
And clearly the first tribe, who had a false belief that the killing of that wooly mammoth would be solve everything, would be more MOTIVATED.
They’d be more likely to kill it, and survive.
This “shiny object” syndrome still exists today.
And THIS instinct needs to be out-gamed.
So you can out game all your competition.
And conquer your life.
