Sleight Of Mouth
If you’ve ever tried to persuade anybody of anything, you’ve likely encountered objections. Even trying to convince your girl to see an action movie instead of a romance movie will elicit objections.
Got goals? What’s standing between you and them is your own objections. Of course, when you look out into the world and decide you can’t do something, or can’t achieve something, we don’t call those objections.
We call those limiting beliefs. We’ve all got them. Tons of them. Endless amounts. They’re like playing whack-a-mole, or trying to kill a billion headed hydra. Cut off one, and another fifty pop up.
The truth is that you can achieve anything you want. The first step is to understand that everything we believe is “true” about reality is merely our own interpretation of events.
Just understanding this, and you’re halfway home.
Luckily, there’s a set of extremely hypnotic language patterns known collectively as “Sleight of Mouth.”
Named after sleight of hand magic tricks, where you get the observer to look one way while you do something outside their field of vision, thereby making it appear to them as magic.
These language patterns work the same way. The trick in overcoming objections and limiting beliefs is that once you know they are false, you’ve simply got to get the mind looking in one direction, while you shake the belief up.
Once you, or your target sees the objection or limiting beliefs from a few different perspective, it (the belief) doesn’t stand a chance.
The result is a much more richer view of the world, and your own capabilities.
If you are applying these to yourself, you’ll slowly develop a much more resourceful view of yourself and what you can accomplish.
If you are using these with your customers, you’ll slowly begin to sell more and more stuff, and make more and more money.
Below are the patterns presented in their most basic form. Try not to think of them as something to “memorize” and then consciously call to mind whenever you encounter resistance.
Consider learning them as if you would learn a foreign language. First understand them, and then drill them again and again until they become second nature, and automatic.
How do you drill them? Once you’ve got them all down, consciously, take some of your own limiting beliefs, and then write them out. Then write out a couple of reframes, using each one of these patterns.
If you dedicate 30 minutes or so a day to practice these patterns by using them overcome your own limiting beliefs, you’ll achieve a couple of things.
One is that you’ll get really, really good at using these patterns conversationally without even thinking about them. This means you’ll be able to destroy objections and limiting beliefs as soon as they come up.
Second is that by using these on as many of your own beliefs as you can, you’ll steadily increase your feelings, deep down in your gut, of you’re TRULY capable in life.
How do you determine what your limiting beliefs are? Think of something you want, and have been struggling with. Money, girls, physical fitness, whatever. Then write down ten or twenty reasons why you haven’t succeeded yet.
You’re looking for statements that describe the world in general. Statements like, “making money is hard, or talking to girls is difficult, or exercise is boring,” or something that you think is true, that is keeping you from getting what you want.
Then simply take that belief, run it through the eighteen patterns described below, and you’re own your way.
Without further ado, here are the patterns.
