Ancient Role Models
One of the reasons they invented storytelling was because it provided good role models.
Well, not really, it was more of an accident.
But we can imagine two different tribes.
Each told stories around the campfire each night.
Epic legends of heroic monster killers of the past.
And we can imagine one difference between these tribes.
How much they believed these ancient heroes were real.
Let’s say one tribe didn’t really believe them.
They figured they were just made up stories to pass the time.
But the other tribe really believed them.
That these heroes really existed.
That these heroes were really watching over them.
The first tribe would always feel kind of alone.
Particularly when doing things like hunting big animals.
But the second tribe rarely felt alone.
They were watched over and protected by these “gods.”
Particularly when doing things like hunting big animals.
We Are Them
It’s pretty easy to see that over time, the second tribe would slowly out-populate the first tribe.
So here we are today.
This is why we LOVE stories.
We can be inspired by well written characters in stories.
The characters who motivate us to live good lives.
One of my favorite reframes about this comes from Harry Potter.
In the last story, Harry finds himself in the train station.
But everything is white, as if he’s in heaven.
Then Dumbledore, his mentor shows and (after he’s been killed) and explains everything to him.
Then Harry says, “Is this real, or is this my imagination?”
Then Dumbledore answers, “Of course it’s your imagination, but that doesn’t mean it’s not real.”
If something serves a valuable purpose, is it not real?
If it helps you create an outcome, is it not real?
Your Brain – Your Rules
If your imaginary role models and heroes give you the courage to get out in the world and build your empire, are they not real?
The same thing goes for your past.
Most of us barely remember our past.
Sure, we remember the big stuff.
Schools, accomplishments, etc.
But some of the stuff, like what they girl in fourth grade said and what she REALLY meant, will always be shrouded in mystery.
But that’s OK, from a brain operation standpoint.
Because the brain only needs ANY kind of meaning.
Brains don’t need accuracy.
Which means if you don’t like a lot of your past experiences, make up new ones.
New ones that will keep you sane but also drive you forward.
After all, it IS your brain.
And your memories are private property.
Use them however you like.
