Slow Is Better
They say that inch by inch, life’s a cinch.
But yard by yard, life is hard.
What the heck does this mean?
Consider this through the lens of weight loss.
Inch by inch would be doing simple exercises every day.
To keep up consistency.
To forget about weighing yourself for a while.
To judge your performance by how your clothes feel, how far you walk or how many pushups you do or whatever.
So long as you are SLOWLY getting better, you’re good.
Yard by yard?
This would be like deciding you need to lose ten pounds.
And you want to lose those ten pounds as quickly as you can.
This takes a ton of motivation, willpower and daily mental and physical effort.
Energy Consumption
This is hard.
It creates the feeling of putting in ton of effort, but not getting any results.
This is the source of the yo-yo diet.
Charge ahead, get exhausted, and quit.
Eventually get disgusted with yourself, charge ahead, get exhausted, and quit.
But the inch by inch person.
Life is ALWAYS easy.
You’re just doing the same thing every day and letting the outcome happen on it’s own.
This, “inch by inch” model is EXTREMELY applicable.
This is why Universities take four years to get through.
Study a little bit every day, and slowly increase your knowledge.
After four years of consistent forward momentum, you’ve got (hopefully) some pretty useful information and skills up in your brain.
What kind of shape would you be in, in four years, if you did 30 minutes of basic calisthenics every day?
How good would you be at the piano if you practiced thirty minutes per day for four years?
Slowly Master Any Skill
This can be applied to ANY kind of skill.
Mental or physical.
You can also apply this model to “meta skills” skills that will generally improve ALL AREAS of your life.
Physical fitness is one.
Influence, persuasion and public speaking is another.
But one of the most important meta skills is also the most overlooked.
How you feel and deal with money.
How you think about spending money today vs. saving it for the future.
Your understandings of good debt and bad debt.
How you can see how your actions today will create outcomes YEARS into the future.
You can do all of this with some simple, daily, money meditations.
This will SLOWLY turn you into a money super-genius.
