Dancing Fool
Once I was at this wedding.
And I was in a really good mood.
I was the best man, and I’d given I pretty good best man speech.
I was pretty nervous leading up to the speech.
But once I started, I was in the zone.
I was telling a few stories, getting a lot of laughter from the crowd.
And a few people came up to be and said that I’d given the best best man speech ever.
Of course, if you’ve seen any best man speeches, you know most of them kind of suck.
Most of them are given by drunken friends who stumble through some sappy speech.
Once I saw the best “man” and his wife give the speech, which was a really lame poem they’d written.
In the world of public speaking, best man speeches are pretty much the bottom of the barrel.
But still, I gave a speech that flowed pretty well, was received pretty good, and got a few compliments.
But then, an hour or so later, I didn’t flow so well.
On the dance floor, I’d gotten a few comments from my dance partners to loosen up a bit.
If it’s one thing I absolutely suck at, it’s dancing.
Embrace The Suck
But it’s really, really fun, particularly when you’re at a wedding, you know most of the people, everybody is in a good mood and the booze is flowing.
Sometimes, though, dancing is pretty nerve wracking.
You feel like you’re on dancing with the stars.
Everybody is watching you and filling out their score cards.
Dancing can be fun, dancing can be horrifying.
But whether you enjoy it is an inner game, not a skill game.
If you’re with friends, and your truly enjoying yourself, nobody really cares if you suck at dancing.
In Asia they have Karaoke a little differently than in the West.
Most places in the West is when you get up and sing in from of strangers.
In Asia, they call them “karaoke boxes” or “karaoke rooms.”
I must agree that they is MUCH more fun that American style.
Sing Horribly
You and your buddies rent a sound proof room.
You order a bunch of food and drinks.
Everybody gets hammered and you take turn passing the mic.
When you’re with friends, it’s really fun to belt out a few songs, even if you absolutely SUCK at singing.
Everybody can enjoy sucking at singing together.
What’s even better is if you can enjoy sucking at something in front of STRANGERS.
This is one of the most confident things you could do.
Sure, if you could jam on the guitar like a god on stage, that would be impressive.
Most people respond by thinking two thoughts:
I wish I could do that,
Followed by
But that would take a lot of practice.
Be Like That Guy
But when you can enjoy blatantly and publicly sucking at something?
That’s something that doesn’t take any practice.
So EVERYBODY will think:
I wish I could be like that guy.
Do this and you’re an instant party hero.
