It’s been said that inch by inch, life’s a cinch. But yard by yard, life is hard.
What does that mean?
If you have a big goal, it’s a lot easier to make very small, very easy consistent daily steps than start off with a huge amount of willpower and determination.
Understanding your own “motivational strategies” can help. All of us are motivated both by moving away from pain, as well as moving toward pleasure.
What often happens is we choose huge goals, because we want to move away from some present “negative” like being overweight, or being broke, or being lonely.
So we build up a HUGE amount of will power and motivation, take some action, which then promptly fizzles out.
What happened?
What happened was that since we were moving away from pain as our main engine of movement, once we got just a little bit away from it, we lost our motivation.
Kind of like standing too close to a fire at a beach party. You might suddenly feel hot, and become EXTREMLY motivated to move, but once you’ve moved only a couple inches, that motivation to move suddenly vanishes.
This is why it’s a good idea to create your own “push-pull” engine. Not only do you need to have something negative your moving away FROM, you need to have a HUGE positive future that is pulling you forward at the same time.
Think of it like driving in a car. Your windshield is HUGE compared to your rear view mirror. Sure, you need to check the rear view occasionally, but most of the time you’re looking forward.
Many people find that this is a great strategy for life. Sure, you can use your negative present state to motivate you to CREATE those goals out in the future, but you can program yourself to be PULLED into the future, rather than being pushed away from the present.
After all, isn’t is easier to jump out of bed in the morning because you are SUPER EXICTED about what you’re creating, rather than super scared or worried about what will happen if you sleep in?
Luckily, there is a very simple strategy to not only create those HUGE goals that will define your life, but a simple way to also create those simple, step by step daily actions that will get you there AUTOMATICALLY.
