One of the funnest jobs I ever had was at a movie theater back when I was in high school. (like a bazillion years ago lol)
The best part was interacting with all the customers. I got a chance to sell tickets, sell popcorn, and stand by the door and take tickets.
Being able have quick, relaxed, friendly conversations with hundreds of people a day is pretty darn cool.
However, the most fun I had was a brief stretch when they decided to offer some “in theater” sales. Usually, you buy your ticket, get in line for some popcorn, and then get your seat.
But they wanted to sell stuff to people who were already in their seats, who’d bypassed the long popcorn lines.
The first girl they chose didn’t do well. She just walked up and down the aisles, with a cart filled with popcorn, drinks, and candy. She really didn’t do much selling.
Then I tried it. Instead of just walking up and down the aisle, I really got into it. I started belting out sales pitches that I made up on the spot, trying to entice people to buy my stuff.
I sold out in nearly every theater, while having loads of fun.
Now, the reason, I think, this seemed so easy was I really didn’t care if they bought stuff or not. I just enjoyed being a clown.
Had I been worried about selling stuff, or had I been paid on commission, it would’ve been a different story.
When you can just relax and have fun, it’s amazing the fun you can create. When you let go of outcome, and just enjoy expressing yourself, you’ll have a blast.
I still remember the most awesome experience from that. For some reason, nobody was buying squat. I was going up and down the aisles, belting my lungs out trying to get a sale. The more I failed, the more fun it became.
The, one guy, in the middle of the aisle, stood up and bought one Snickers bar.
And got a huge round of applause from the crowd.
Let go of your fear, and enjoy yourself.
You’ll be amazed what can happen.
