Lost Hay
My friend told me once about a maze he went through.
Somewhere in the Midwest.
Made out of bales of hay.
If you got lost, they had these “towers” you could climb up on and get a larger view.
So you could game out your escape.
Getting a meta view is helpful.
One of my personal favorite meta views of all time was when a buddy of mine and I went to the top of Mt. Whitney.
The tallest mountain in the continental U.S.
We didn’t go up the front like most people.
We hiked in from the back, taking a few days to get there.
Most hikes I’ve been on have been in a big loop.
But this was a hike with a big destination.
And the morning we woke up, after sleeping on top (not supposed to do that!) I had to take a dump.
And because Whitney is a well traveled hiking trip, the Forestry service puts up about three toilets on the way up.
One was up on top.
Best View Ever
But the one up on top had been recently damaged during a storm.
Only three walls, no roof.
As luck would have it, the missing wall was the one with the door.
And it was facing exactly where we came from.
So there I sat, on top of Mt. Whitney, taking care of my business while gazing out over the mountains we’d just hiked through over the last week.
A very nice moment.
When they organize terrorist cells, they make sure NOBODY understands the big picture.
So in case anybody gets caught and tortured, they don’t know anything about the operation.
Only their small role.
This is good enough for most people.
To know enough to get to work, get it done, get paid, and live happily ever after.
But it’s certainly not a requirement.
Being a big picture person is one of those things that people think we just “are.”
Which Type Are You?
Like on those goofy personality tests.
Are you a big picture kind of person?
Or do you see the small details?
You are NOT one or the other.
You CAN be whichever you want.
Sure, you might have tendencies towards on or the other.
But you can build your brain skills in any direction you want.
So you can see the big picture when you want to see the big picture.
Your brain is a fascinating organ that scientists barely understand.
You can build up your brain to get a bird’s eye view of your life, your future, and anything else.
