Modern Hero
A long, long time ago, I took a class at a local church on the Book of Revelation.
It was at a Catholic church, which has a slightly different view of that particular book.
Their stance is that it is a metaphor, and can’t be interpreted on its own.
Even then, it was a class from a literature and symbolism standpoint.
Not a religious one.
But the thing I remember most was this nun, who gave the introduction to the teacher, said something.
She gave us her definition of “evil.”
Very simple.
Very clever.
And obviously, very easy to remember, as that class was AT LEAST twenty years ago.
Anyhow, here’s her definition.
“Evil” is “live” backwards.
Forward Or Backward
Which means it’s something that rings true OUTSIDE of any religious or even moral connotations.
Living a healthy life is not evil.
Living a life that makes you less healthy is “evil.”
Creating positive, self-sustaining, mutually beneficial relationships, is not evil
Creating win-lose, manipulative relationships are evil.
Things that do not ENHANCE your life are evil.
Things that DO ENHANCE your life are not.
These things are good.
Improving your skills, maximizing your time here on Earth, building up as many positive relationships as you can.
Now, here’s a thought.
Non Evil Money
Let’s say you make something and sell it.
It took some time to build it, and you are eager to sell it to get some money.
You TRADE that thing with somebody else.
The guy who bought it is HAPPY.
Happier than he was before.
You are happy.
Happier than you were before.
Before there was you, and you thing that you made.
Before, there was him, and the money he had.
Once you traded you BOTH increased in happiness.
Not evil.
Good Times
The OPPOSITE of evil.
This paradigm of nun-reframe makes complicated things easy.
Think of any action.
Will it ENHANCE your life, or will it do the opposite?
Some things feel fantastic when you do them.
But suppose you did them ALL the time?
Many things can be good in the short term.
Temperance is, after all, a virtue.
All things in moderation.
Wake Up
In modern times, it’s VERY EASY to get stuck in “evil traps.”
Short term escapes that end up being long term traps.
Bad eating, bad sleeping, bad thinking, bad behaving.
Most people in society would shriek like a banshee if you mentioned even subtly that they are doing “evil things.”
What about you?
Are there things you do today, that you would LIKE to dial down a notch?
To make it easier for you to build a more fantastic life?
For you and everybody else you’d like to include?
