Independent Thought
One of the more interesting psychological experiments is the famous Milgram experiment.
It showed, more or less, that 2/3’s of people will mindlessly obey an authority figure.
Even if it means “shocking” another innocent person.
In the test, the guy getting shocked was only pretending.
Now the label “mindlessly” sounds derogatory.
It is not.
Humans would absolutely NOT have evolved if most people weren’t willing to “mindlessly” follow authority.
This is NOT a defect of us humans.
It really is a feature.
Sports, business decisions, households, even relationships work better of all people voluntarily slip into their roles as leaders and followers.
If you are in a situation where you don’t know what’s going on, it is NATURAL and absolutely RATIONAL to turn off your brain and do what you’re told.
This of course requires that the person telling you what to do has both their and your best interests in mind.
This is one of the most critical functions of our nature.
This works along with social proof.
Go With The Flow
The Asch conformity experiments showed the 2/3’s of people will choose with the crowd, even when they “know” it’s really the wrong choice.
This, again, is NOT a slam on us silly humans.
If we didn’t have the instinct to follow both authority AND social proof, we would not have evolved.
We are social animals.
Team players.
Imagine if every time a football team went into the huddle they not only argued over who was in charge, AND they wouldn’t agree on the next play unless they team voted every time.
That would be a disaster.
The team that would win every single time would a well-oiled, hierarchal system.
Everybody knows their job, everybody is good at their job.
This team would even do well with a no-huddle offense marching down the field.
Now for the money question.
Be The Authority
How can you leverage this understanding of human nature?
To become more dominant socially?
To build a more persuasive and seductive frame, socially?
To BE the person who is the authority in the minds of everybody else.
The answer is simple.
And because this answer is terrifying for most people, you can clean up.
The answer?
Public speaking.
First, get comfortable getting up and speaking.
Two, become much more of a confident speaker.
Finally, become more of a persuasive speaker.
This is the one meta skill that will make EVERYTHING easier.
