Self hypnosis is an incredible tool that you can use to install pretty much any behavior. It’s not nearly as mysterious as most people think. In fact, as soon as you finish reading this article, you’ll know everything you need to get started.
Hypnosis is a relaxed state where your mind is open to suggestion. When you are awake and alert, you have plenty of defensive filters keeping out potentially dangerous information and ideas.
However, when you’re in a state of self hypnosis, you are relaxed and open. This is the perfect time to give yourself positive statements and life changing visualization.
As proof of this, there was a famous study done years ago. A basketball team was separated into three groups. The first group practiced free throws like normal. Every day, they’d practice for thirty minutes.
The second group practiced only in their mind. For thirty minutes every day, the second group got into a relaxed mental state, otherwise known as self hypnosis, and mentally rehearses making free throws.
The third group didn’t practice at all. They were the control group.
Unsurprisingly, the third group didn’t improve their performance. But surprisingly, the first group AND the second group had similar rates of increased performance.
This means that you don’t have to go out and practice something in order to get better at it. You can sit back and relax, and practice in your own mind. Right there at home.
You want to become a better public speaker? Practice in your mind. You want to become more comfortable talking to girls? Practice in your mind. You want to become a more persuasive salesperson? Practice in your mind.
Take the skill you’d like to learn, or the behavior you’d like to adopt, and create a situation where you can visualize yourself performing it just like you’d like.
Then get into a relaxed state. Loosen your clothes, turn off your phone. Close your eyes, and slow down your breathing. One the inhale, tell yourself, “I am…”
On the exhale, tell yourself, “…relaxed.”
Do this for a couple of minutes, and you’re ready. It will help if you can set a timer to “wake” you after ten or fifteen minutes.
Just focus your mind on the task at hand. Imagine going through the motions, and having amazing success.
While you’re imagining your new behavior, call to mind as many positive emotions as you can. Practice the behavior both associated, meaning that you’re actually doing the behavior, and dissociated, meaning that you’re watching yourself do the behavior.
The more you do this, and the longer you do this, the sooner you’ll see amazing results.
