We’d LOVE to have some kind of system or idea that we can “install” into our brains, and have it simply run on auto pilot.
For example, if you wanted to get really good at public speaking, and wanted to be able to charismatically and enthusiastically get your points across to an audience sitting in rapt attention, there’s two ways to go about it.
One way is to keep searching endlessly for mind tricks that will make it easier. To be sure, there’s plenty of courses, books and seminars that claim to “install” things into your brain, so all you’ve got to do is sit back and enjoy the party.
Unfortunately, most of the fears that are stopping us are deeply programmed into our brains by evolution, and can be difficult to get rid of.
Think of going on a diet, for example. Hunger is a feeling beyond your conscious control. No mind trick on its own is going to make you look at a bacon cheeseburger with only passive interest.
Sure, mind tricks can help, but only if you practice putting them to use. Your brain is hard wired to think certain thoughts in certain situations.
Only by conscious, consistent practice will you override your factory programming and come up with something better.
After all, your caveman brain still thinks we live in a world where food, social status, and acceptance are crucially important to our survival. If we pass up any of those, our caveman brain starts screaming bloody murder.
That’s why it’s up to you, and your conscious brain, to make a difference. Surround yourself with a shield of consciously created intention, and tell your inner caveman to settle down.
