Enter The Dragon
When somebody does heroin for the first time, it feels pretty good.
It’s often described as indescribable.
The basic theory is that our brains are wired from evolution to feel really good but only AFTER a fantastic accomplishment.
Killing a woolly mammoth, getting mad respect for the tribe.
This was very effective in keeping us motivated.
Of keeping us on purpose.
A built-in dopamine rush after a fantastic accomplishment.
But drugs and alcohol tend to circumvent this for some reason.
You get the reward without doing any work.
If you don’t have any access to drugs or alcohol, once the “high” wears off, after all the woolly mammoth meat has been eaten, the ONLY way to get that “high” again is to kill another woolly mammoth.
But for addicts, getting another high is simple.
This brings up the idea of “diminishing returns.”
Dismal Science
The very first high is fantastic.
Since you have nothing to compare it to.
But each subsequent high is less and less fantastic.
This structure shows up everywhere.
For addicts, they call it “chasing the dragon.”
But they never catch it.
This is the same for all addictions.
Even shopping addictions and modern consumerism.
Every subsequent “hit” (drugs, sex, buying something) feels less fantastic than the previous one.
You end up chasing something that you THINK will satisfy you.
But it only leaves you wanting more.
This is a terrible place to be in.
Ending addictions is a very, very difficult thing to do.
Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, shopping, using credit cards, sugar, fast food, the list goes on and on.
Self Delusion
This is based on an intellectual misunderstanding.
That you NEED something to make you whole.
And if you get trapped into the never ending cycle of dragon chasing doom, you’ll keep chasing until it comes to a natural endpoint.
No more money, you die, all your friends leave you, etc.
What is the misunderstanding?
That you need something to make you whole.
You do not.
Just right now, reading this words, you don’t need anything.
You have all the skills and abilities, or at least the desire to learn these things, built into your DNA.
It’s a slight shift, but it is profound.
To achieve something, feel fantastic, enjoy that feeling, and then achieve something else.
Just like we were programmed.
God Among Men
And there is a FANTASTIC side effect of this lifestyle.
When you talk to people, they’ll feel it.
Without even trying, you’ll radiate it.
With a deep feeling both always feeling whole AND in the process of creating something, you will be free from frustration.
You’ll never worry about short term outcomes again.
You will radiate an energy few ever experience.
