Unfair Planet
The Pareto distribution is an interesting concept.
It says that 20% of any system does 80% of the work.
For example, if you took all the athletes in any professional sport, 20% of the players score 80% of the points.
This would easiest to see in something like basketball, where there are a lot of points scored per game.
Or if you looked at professional athletes and income, you’d find 20% are making 80% of the money.
But this is a smooth function.
Meaning in that top 20%, the Pareto distribution still holds.
The top 20% of the top 20% make 80% of 80%.
Or 4% are making 64%.
Or to go one level up, the top 20% of the top 20% of the top 20% (0.8%) are making 80% of 80% of 80% (51%).
This is a function of pure statistics.
Always Top Dogs
In a purely fair system, with nobody cheating or anything, less than 1% of people are “doing” more than half of the work.
The top 1% of athletes make more than half of ALL athletes.
This is true on online dating.
But not real dating.
Online dating is not quite accurate.
Not because of the fake pictures or anything.
But because it’s more like a popularity contest.
Meaning the way online dating works is by “attention.”
Not by action.
The top guys and girls get the most attention from everybody else.
Swiping is easy.
It doesn’t cost anything.
Not Quite Accurate
So the Pareto distribution is over-pronounced.
But in the real world, it is fairly accurate.
20% of dudes are having 80% of the sex.
But is when you include EVERYBODY in a large city, or other large area.
If you walked into any particular venue, the 80-20 may hold, it may not.
This is another reason why online dating is skewed.
Looking at pictures tells you nothing about their personality.
Nothing about how their voice sounds.
Nothing about how confident or unconfident you are.
Nothing about street-level social skills.
Online dating is kind of the FIRST stage of hiring people.
Sorting Process
You put an add in the paper.
You get thousands of applications.
And then you cut those down to about 10%.
And then you need to TALK to those people.
Online dating or job applications can ONLY get your foot in the door.
But when you are in a social environment?
Your foot is already in the door.
Online dating is kind of like target shooting.
But in a social situation, this is like a live firefight.
Anybody can practice hitting a target when nobody’s shooting at you.
But those same guys that are killers on the range fold like cheap suit when bullets are flying all over the place.
