Know Thyself
Carl Jung is famous for saying:
“Unless you make the unconscious conscious, it will drive your life and you will call it fate.”
What does this mean?
We have plenty of unconscious things driving our behavior.
Some we pick up through childhood.
Irrational fears, social anxiety, etc.
Some are programmed into us.
Like food and eating.
We absolutely must eat in order to survive.
Gotta Eat
So eating is a HUGE part of everybody’s life.
Major holidays and events are centered around eating.
Even the idea of “breaking bread” means to eat together and cement a relationship.
But eating can also be a problem.
If you don’t adequately manager your hunger instinct.
It’s VERY easy to eat more than you really need.
Other instincts can be equally devastating if not managed properly.
Dating and romance are all based on a collection of “reproduction” instincts.
Individually, we don’t really NEED to ever have sex or be in a relationship.
Sure, it absolutely sucks not to, but as a species, we only need to maintain or grow the population.
Driven To Love
So we are ALL programmed with the same reproduction instincts.
Misunderstood or mismanaged, these can utterly DESTROY an otherwise happy life.
Getting with the wrong person, being to afraid or short sighted to get with the right person, all these can destroy us if we aren’t careful.
But there is one instinct that often goes unnoticed.
The “once and done” instinct.
Plenty of people have a special “thing” they are after.
Once I finally lose weight I’ll be able to ….
Once I get the courage to ask her out I’ll be able to…
Once I get that promotion, then I’ll be able to…
These are self deceptions.
Instinctive self deceptions.
Must. Succeed.
The MORE we believe that the next thing is ALL we need, the MORE we’ll go after it.
In the ancient world, this instinct helped us to get it done.
To give us MASSIVE motivation to get that next thing.
And once we GOT that next thing, our environment did the rest.
A big kill, a safe spot next to the river, a certain level of status, etc.
Because life was so harsh back then, we were always reminded that life is a series of conquests.
Today, it’s very easy to forget that.
Keep Charging
To forget that on the other side of that “one thing” we all think we need, are plenty of other things that we’ll go after with the same determination.
When you live your life with LONG GAME ambition, you will always feel on purpose.
