Ancient Philosophy
Stoicism has been around for a long time.
Since at least 300 BC.
Invented by a guy named Zeno of Citium.
Plenty of Romans were also stoics.
Notably, Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome.
He’s the guy that came up with the phrase, “The Obstacle Is The Way.”
What does this mean?
Every time we go through and obstacle, we learn a lot.
We learn about ourselves.
We learn about the world.
The more we learn, the better we can do.
The more our skills grow.
The more experience this puts in our brain.
And the existence of an obstacle presupposes it is blocking our path.
Lead The Way
We WANT to go somewhere, literally or metaphorically, but an obstacle pops up.
And it IS an obstacle because we don’t know how to get around it.
Otherwise it wouldn’t be an obstacle.
So when we try our best to figure it out, we learn a lot.
What works, what doesn’t work, etc.
Once we make it to the other side of that obstacle, we are in a better state.
We metaphorically “level up” with new skills and experiences.
Sometimes these obstacles remind us of echoes from our pasts.
Ancient memories that are keeping us from going forward.
So when we see these obstacles up ahead, they remind is, usually subconsciously, of bad memories.
And we imagine that the obstacle, up ahead, is going to REPLICATE those bad memories.
Scary Stuff
So the obstacle is not only in our path, not only something we need to figure out how to get through, but it creates FEAR.
A deep feeling of dread.
When an obstacle is just an obstacle, we get through it.
Up and over a mountain, or take another route.
But obstacles that are connected to deep and ancient memories of rejection are more like dark caves.
Caves we might not get out of.
Remember the movie, “The Empire Strikes Back?”
When Luke went to train with Yoda?
It wasn’t just running around and trying to levitate things out of the swamp.
He had to go into the cave.
And face his biggest fears.
Inner Demons
Because unless we face our biggest fear, we’ll see them everywhere.
The good news is our biggest fears are not NEARLY as big as we think they are.
They were created when we were very young and powerless.
We didn’t know ANYTHING about ourselves or the world.
Kind of like if you were a little kid, you probably have memories of a HUGE playground where you used to play.
But if you were to go back to that playground today, you might be surprised how small it really is.
Just like you’ll be surprised how SMALL those ancient fears really are.
Kill your demons and get in the game of life and play.
