Small Points
Evolution is kind of like credit card debt.
Or the flip side, slowly built wealth.
Meaning only a small percent interest can make all the difference.
Einstein allegedly said that compounded interest was the eighth wonder of the world.
The second richest fictional person is the leader of the vampire family in the Twilight books and movies.
Because they are several hundred years old they’ve been building wealth, through compound interest, all this time.
The first richest is Scrooge McDuck.
There is photographic evidence of all his wealth.
Like him in a swimming pool filled with gold and diamonds.
Anyhow, if you could put a couple hundred bucks in a bank earning only a couple percent interest, and then come back in a couple hundred years, you’d be SET.
Evolution kind of works the same way.
Unlike how most people imagine it you only need a couple percentage points advantage over your competition.
Competitive Advantage
And you’ll eventually out populate them.
One tribe has, say, on average, a 1.2 replication rate.
Compared to a tribe with a 1.1 replication rate, the first one will eventually out populate the first.
Now that we’ve set this up, let’s imagine a split test.
Two different tribes.
Each chasing a wooly mammoth.
Everything is the same, except for ONE difference.
One tribe sees the wooly mammoth, but they have a kind of hallucination about that woolly mammoth.
They actually believe that once that kill that animal, EVERYBODY will live happily ever after.
This NOT true, but they believe it.
It’s NOT a rational belief.
Successfully Irrational
They didn’t decide to believe this.
This belief is driven by their DNA.
The second tribe?
They know that when they kill it, they’ll eat it.
They know they’ll enjoy a couple of happy weeks, but then it’s back to hunting.
They see BEYOND the killing of the wooly mammoth.
The second first tribe ONLY sees the immediate success.
But lucky for them, Mother Nature’s got their back.
Once they kill and eat that mammoth, they’ll get hungry and realize they need to hunt again.
Which tribe will succeed?
The first one.
Massive Drive
Because they believe that ALL THEY NEED is to kill that wooly mammoth, and EVERYBODY will live happily ever after, they have just a LITTLE more motivation than the rational tribe.
So even though they are driven by an irrational belief, that irrational belief makes them more effective hunters.
This is who we are.
This is why we have a tendency to chase the NEXT shiny object.
This is why we truly believe that ALL WE NEED is that next thing.
This is the core reason why most NEVER succeed.
They get a couple of short term goals, but once the excitement fades, they feel a huge let down.
And this leads them to conclude that something is WRONG.
Nothing is wrong.
This is our nature.
To chase bigger and bigger goals over the course of our lives.
Not one huge thing that will somehow magically fix everything.
Live this way and conquer the earth.
Just like your ancestors.
