Who Are You?
So, a guy sits down at a bar.
The guy sitting next to him looks him over.
“What’s up, buddy?” our hero asks.
The guy next to him again looks him up and down, a skeptical look in his eyes.
Finally, the unfriendly guy demands:
“Do you have any idea who I AM?”
Our hero gives him another quick look over and responds:
“Sorry, sir, have you forgotten?”
Yeah, lame I know.
But the idea of who we “are” is always a weird kind of question.
This question of who ARE you is both philosophically deep, potentially frustrating, but also incredibly simple if you WANT.
Here’s a another lame joke to help ease it to the EASY answer.
Simple Question
Three guys are interviewing for a job.
An engineer, a mathematician, and an economist.
Engineer is first, and the job interviewer asks:
“What’s 2 plus 2?”
Engineer responds that it’s based on the constraints of the system, what specifically is being measured, the temperature, pressure, gravity, etc.
Interviewer thanks him.
Next is the mathematician.
Interviewer asks the same question.
“What’s 2 plus 2?”
Mathematician looks at him sideways, gets up and leaves without answering.
Economist is next.
Same question.
“What’s 2 plus 2?”
The economist gets a gleam in his eye, leans in and asks a bit quietly:
“Well, that depends, what do you WANT it to be?”
Define Your Identity
Most of us like the idea of getting accepted and approved by others.
Most of us don’t like the idea of getting rejected or getting any hint of disapproval from others.
So we “operate” socially very carefully.
We are careful NOT to say the wrong thing.
While at the same time trying to get approval.
Imagine if it was your first try at open mic night.
But you had the same strategy.
You wanted to be funny, but you didn’t want to offend anybody.
So you tried to create the funniest jokes, but also the ones least likely to offend anybody.
This would make for a very BORING set.
It’s pretty strange, from an objective standpoint to watch us humans operate.
We are desperate for the approval from gorgeous people.
Approval might mean sex, after all.
Who You Really Are
But in order for them to accept us, they have to know us.
This gets back to the question of who we “are.”
There are a few ways we can answer this question.
Like the engineer.
Who we are is dependent on the situation, the context, what we happened to eat the night before.
Like the mathematician.
We are who we are, so that’s kind of a silly question.
Or we can answer this question like the economist.
Who do you WANT to be?
After all, NOBODY knows who you really “are.”
So why not BE whoever you want?
