Money is a mystery to most people.
Which is a shame, since it’s pretty easy.
Make no mistake, GETTING money is a never ending puzzle.
Perhaps closely related to our always evolving purpose.
But money itself, how it works, is very simple.
Only, they never teach us this in school.
Even if you specifically took a class in economics, most of the basic ideas of money would be overshadowed by an avalanche of economic flim-flam and purposely perplexing academic language.
But at it’s core, money is a placeholder.
For example, consider this very simple metaphor.
We are animals, so we eat.
We have a fat storage system.
We eat more than we need, and the excess is stored as fat.
When we can’t find food, we burn the fat as energy.
Now consider the same idea but with money.
Fat Money
We work and we get money.
We use the money to buy the stuff we need and want.
But if we make MORE money than we need to buy the stuff we need and want, we can save it.
Just like body fat is, literally, stored energy, saved money is stored “stuff.”
The stuff we can buy.
If you were to work really hard for a while, live very frugally for a while, you might save up enough money to never have to work again.
This is the whole idea behind “retirement.”
But there’s a kind of fly in the ointment.
An idea that sounds super compelling, but can make life MUCH more complex and potentially tragic.
And that is the concept of debt.
This is essentially spending money BEFORE you get it.
This is the OPPOSITE of saved money.
Debt is like NEGATIVE money.
If you work hard and save well, you can look forward to a long time without NEEDING to work.
You can think of your saved money as representing time without work.
But with debt, it’s the opposite.
Debt represents negative money.
A huge hole in your bank account.
Ball and Chain
Which represents a lot of future work WITHOUT getting money.
Or working hard, putting half your paycheck to fill the hole in your bank account, and the other half to just BARELY scrape by.
If you imagine this kind of future, life SUCKS.
If you imagine the other future, a pile of money and free time without work, you can imagine a much BETTER future.
The trick is how can you SWITCH from a future that sucks to a future that absolutely does not suck.
