Everybody wants things.
Everybody wants to get rid of things.
Everything costs something.
Nothing is free.
This is why economics is referred to as the dismal science.
We humans LOVE to believe in magic.
Not necessarily magic, but we believe there is always some kind of short cut.
PT Barnum said there is a sucker born every minute.
And that we are suckers because we believe things that are too good to be true.
But the corollary to this is you can’t con an honest man.
In this case, honest doesn’t mean tell the truth.
It means making an honest living kind of honest.
Not cheating people or scamming people.
To put in an honest days work.
And get an honest days pay.
Your work hard all day and get paid what you are worth.
This is an ideal.
Something that is very, very hard.
Way back when they invented farming, this created a new problem.
Anthropologists call it the “freeloader” problem.
If you live in a tribe of hunter gatherers, people you’d known your entire life, you HAVE to put in an “honest” days work.
It would be absolutely impossible to cheat.
Nobody would even want to cheat.
But once farming was invented, people COULD cheat.
People invented all kinds of ways to scam the crap out of each other.
Because it’s called the “freeloader” problem, it makes it sounds like it was only “lower social class” folks who are freeloaders.
Kind of like today when people talk about “welfare.”
This label IMMEDIATELY calls to mind people way down at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder who are busily scamming the system.
But just like way back then, today the people who are scamming the system the most are way up at the top.
Scam Yourself Powerful
That’s how they got there.
Our human brain under these horrific modern conditions can make it very easy to go insane.
We have wants and needs.
Everything we want, everything we need costs something.
Time, effort, money, risk, opportunity costs.
We look around us and everybody seems to have such an easy life.
They’re posting all about it on Instagram and Facebook.
For most people, social media a constant reminder.
Of all the hot ladies you don’t have.
Everybody But You
All the fat income streams you don’t have.
All the other people who are flexing everywhere and anyway they can.
This makes us VERY susceptible to shortcuts.
We want to be like them SO MUCH, we are desperate for anything.
One of the hardest instincts to shrug off is social proof.
Our instincts make us very, very much WANT to follow the crowd.
But if we are following fake people who live fake lives this is IMPOSSIBLE.
It’s impossible to follow fake people because they don’t exist.
On the other hand, what happens when you learn to MANAGE social proof?
To choose who you aspire to be like, and who you don’t?
Choose what you want to go after, and go after it.
Not what you think you SHOULD go after.
If you go after what you want to go after, in your own time and in your own way, you will find peace.
