When I was very, very young, my older brother went to see a hypnotist. Or rather, a hypnotist came to his school, as a kind of “show and tell.”
He volunteered to go up on stage. At one point, during the hypnosis, he was instructed to think of his favorite food. All the volunteers did this.
Then the hypnotist passed out lemons, and told them it was their favorite food.
They all ate the lemons, peels and all.
My brother told me his lemon tasted just like a cheeseburger.
There’s some people who don’t believe that hypnosis even exists. That it’s some kind of a con or sham.
There are others that believe that we are always hypnotized, all the time.
I don’t know about you, but being able to eat a lemon and think it tastes like a cheeseburger is a pretty good trick, whatever you want to call it.
The theory I kind of like best is the one that says all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis.
The hypnotists gives you some suggestions, but you are the one who really decides whether you want to accept them or not.
After all, (despite what you see on TV, movies or fiction) there are some deep internal safeguards we ALL have that no hypnotist would be able to get through.
Nobody would be able to hypnotize you to jump off a bridge unless you were feeling pretty suicidal anyway.
When you hypnotize yourself, through direct self hypnosis, you give yourself “affirmations,” or sentences you repeat over and over.
When a hypnotist hypnotizes you, he or she gives you “suggestions,” meaning it’s up to you whether or not to take them.
Nobody really calls them “commands” or “orders” for the simple reason that it’s up to you to take them or not.
Which is why conversational hypnosis is so incredibly powerful. Contrary to what some marketing gurus teach, it’s not a method to turn people into your mindless robot-slaves.
But it is a wonderful way to covertly deliver “suggestions” to your listener, so they will perceive them through their own filters, ideas, experiences and beliefs.
So even if you hand them a lemon, they’ll use their own imagination to turn it into whatever they want to turn it into, based on their own desires and values.
Not yours.
