Nurture vs. Nature
The nurture vs. nature debate has been around for a while.
Way back in the day, long before science, they had the idea that “Jesus” was already in our brain.
Some philosopher guy from the middle ages, where “Jesus = science” believed that if you raised a baby in complete isolation, they would just kind of “figure out” Jesus.
This seems silly today.
But back during the middle ages, before the printing press, ALL information came from the church.
Since those were the only dudes that would write things down.
But as it turns out we do have some basic things hard wired into our brains.
And they’ve done some pretty interesting “experiments” on babies.
Sugar Not Garlic
For example a kid will naturally turn his or her head TOWARD the smell of anything sweet, and AWAY from something like garlic.
UNLESS the mom ate garlic while she was pregnant.
Then the kid will turn their head TOWARD garlic.
There’s also this weird way kids recognized really tiny differences between sounds.
Like the difference between “baa” and “paa.”
When you say “baa,” you use your vocal cords BEFORE you open your lips.
But with “paa” you use your vocal chords slightly AFTER you open your lips.
But babies can differentiate between the two.
Blocks And People
Babies can also count before they can differentiate objects.
They put three blocks behind a screen, and three blocks come out.
Baby is happy.
They put three blocks behind a screen, and three PEOPLE come out.
Baby is happy.
But they put three blocks behind the screen, and only two blocks come out, baby acts like the universe just broke.
Three blocks = three people = three fuzzy objects = OK
Three blocks = two blocks = PANIC!
Causal Assumptions
We also seem to assume connections or causal relationships when none exist.
Two blips are both bouncing around on the screen.
Baby is happy.
Both blips stop.
Baby is happy.
But one blip stops, and the other doesn’t?
Panic!
They, the researchers, suspect this means baby ASSUMES the two dots are connected in some way.
We silly humans do this all the time.
Make connections between random things.
Purple Socks
Wearing your purple socks and finding money MEANS those socks are now your LUCKY socks.
Because you ate a grilled cheese the night before your job interview, and you got a job offer, grilled cheese = LUCKY FOOD.
Of course, we can leverage this.
This is how we train dogs, and train ourselves.
If you are expecting a phone call from your new lover, just the phone vibrations will MAKE your heart skip a couple of beats.
But when you see the text is from your buddy, on his way over to play video games that = DISASTER.
You can elicit any positive feelings you want from people.
By talking about the things we ALL want.
And covertly connecting those positive feelings to YOU.
