It’s no secret that Milton Erickson was one of the most persuasive and effective “hypnotists” that ever lived.
I use quotations because he came up with a whole new way of hypnotizing people that didn’t require that they know they were being hypnotized.
You’d think somebody coming into the office of a hypnotist to be cured of their fear of heights would be open to the idea of being hypnotized in the traditional way.
Often times, this wasn’t the case.
Funny thing about us humans is we LOVE our control. We don’t take kindly to the idea of giving up control of our brains to somebody we’ve just met. Even if they are a world famous doctor that can cure people in a matter of minutes.
So, what is it about these patterns that work so well?
One is that they are conversational. The sound like a normal, everyday back and forth conversation. You can use them in a sales presentation, on a date, or even playing around with people you meet out in public.
Another reason is they are incredibly respectful. They are artfully vague, so the listener will have to “fill in the blanks” with their own ideas and their own experiences. This completely relaxes their critical factor, as you aren’t trying to hijack their brain.
The third reason is that you don’t really need to know much about your listener or reader, just that they sort of maybe want something along the lines of what you’re talking about. Some of the “vagueness” mentioned above can easily be used for their criteria, so they’ll fill in that as well.
Naturally, when they see somebody like you walk up and start speaking in terms of what they want, and how they want it, so that they can easily use their own ideas, experiences and pictures, you’ll be perceived in a special way.
