I needed a baseball hat so I went to a local sporting goods store.
I do a lot of walking, and it’s getting pretty sunny so I need to protect my face.
I hadn’t bought a hat in a long time. So I went to see what they had in stock.
When I got here, they were starting a kind of intro to backpacking workshop. It was on a Saturday morning, and there were a few people.
It was kind of an intro, how to, explanation of the equipment kind of thing.
I hadn’t been backpacking in a while, and it was surprisingly interesting in a nostalgia kind of way.
Back When I Was Your Age
I used to do a lot of backpacking a couple decades ago, at least a week long trip, once per year.
There were a few guys who seemed to be in the same situation.
You could kind of tell who the beginners were and who wasn’t.
We started talking after and decided to hit up a local Mexican restaurant.
There were four of us, and we all had various experience backpacking.
One guy was pretty quiet, almost shy, like he wished he were somewhere else.
It Was Like This
But then he told us his origin story.
It wasn’t that this guy was shy, it was that he was wondering how much of his story he was going to tell us.
He said he used to be a science geek.
That he got a decent job at a decent company. But then it was kind of a let down.
When he was in high school, and college, he always felt like an outsider. He kept telling himself that as soon as he got a job, and started making money, everything would change.
Good For A While
The first few years it did change. He started to make more money. He started to become more socially outgoing.
He started to meet interesting people. He was even able to create romantic relationships with a few people.
But something was still missing, and he didn’t know what.
He doesn’t know how or why he decided to, but he went camping.
Only With His Car
It was only car camping, but just being away from the city, away from the people, it seemed familiar.
Like he was able to remember this.
Like somehow this reminded him of something from a long time ago.
Soon he got more into it. Instead of car camping he started to go backpacking.
And then he started to meditate while he was camping.
That’s when things started to feel really familiar.
Commune With Nature
When he started to feel comfortable away from people. Feel comfortable away from technology.
Like he was being welcomed home after a long, long time away.
And soon he started to have profound experiences.
He started to feel like he was traveling.
He would mediate, and close his eyes and start to experience very vivid visualizations and hallucinations.
Then he started to see things.
At first, he thought he was just having some very realistic hallucinations.
It felt like he was traveling, and he could see other people around the world.
It was like he could float above them, hear their thoughts, feel their emotions, see their thinking.
Pretty soon he started to take notes.
To pay close attention to these hallucinations.
To pay close attention to these imaginations.
Experiment With Hallucinations
Then, just for fun, he started to do some experimenting.
All this time he assumed that this wasn’t really happening.
That this is just an imagination in your mind.
That this is just a very rich, very vivid hallucination.
But these tests proved that these weren’t.
The tests proved that these were real things from real people.
This Could Be Worth Something
And not simultaneous things, but things from the future, things from the past, and potential things.
He did test after test.
The more he experimented within these hallucinations, the more he realized that he could really predict the future.
And he used this information to create inventions.
To create technology.
And for the next decade, that’s what he would do.
Billion Dollar Brain
He would mediate and use his astral observations to figure out the best things to invent that he knew would be very successful.
He would create enough inventions to start a company, get it going, sell it off and do this again.
The more he did this, the easier it was to make tons of money.
He thinks it has something to do with feeling very familiar being around only organic organisms.
Being completely away from technology.
We ended up not ordering anything.
Chips and Lunch?
At first, we were going to eat some chips, get some lunch and then call it day.
But we ended up listening to this guy talk for hours.
I didn’t end up getting a hat, I don’t even remember looking.
But I am interesting in going backpacking.
Something I hadn’t thought about in a long time.
Remember To Feel Familiar
But it is a great way to feel familiar with things that have been around long before humans showed up.
And things that will be here long after humans are gone.
