Squishy Meaning
Reframing is very powerful linguistic tool.
Basically it’s the art of saying, “This doesn’t mean this, this means that.”
You can use these in sales, by taking objections and turning them into reasons to buy.
You can use these in dating, in the early phases or the later, stable relationship phase.
You can use these to help friends overcome problems.
A very ancient idea is that it’s not the world that causes us grief, it is the meaning we give to the world that causes us grief.
Our interpretation of the world.
Or their interpretation of the world.
They may think the product is too expensive, but you can help them find another way to look at things.
Your buddy might think the world is out to get him, but you can playfully give him a better way to look at things.
Reframing Humor
The linguistic structure of reframing is very similar to the basic structure of comedy and overall silliness.
There is a lot of flexibility built into English.
Flexibility you can use to change meanings, create humor, or confuse brains.
One way to describe people that are having trouble is “stuck.”
Like they have a head full of ideas that aren’t helping them.
Keeping them stuck.
Unable to move forward.
But with some linguistic trickery, you can “shake them loose.”
Think of this as like a linguistic defibrillator.
A shock to the heart to return normal rhythm.
One way to think of quick bursts of humor is a brain defibrillator.
To “shake lose” the false or unhelpful ideas in their brain.
And quickly put in some better ones when they are not looking.
The structure is pretty simple.
They tell you the problems they are having.
The World’s Fault
Usually in the form of, “My life sucks because the world sucks.”
By far, the most common complaint in modern times.
Then you lower the boom.
A few linguistic reframes that only get them thinking, but get them laughing.
Then a few lines to purposely confuse their brains.
Build in a bit of amnesia.
Then drop in a few embedded commands to help them think better.
Then some more confusion.
Super Fast
This only takes a few seconds.
Maybe a minute.
But then their problem will have magically disappeared.
And they’ll be feeling much better.
And they’ll look at you like your some kind of brain magician.
A word wizard that describes things in funny but meaningful ways.
Somebody who uses language in ways they’ve never heard of before.
Which can turn you into a party hero everywhere you go.
