No Machines
The Luddites were a group of laborers way back in the day.
Today, it’s an insult.
As it is used today, it means people are dumb, old fashioned, slow, unable to change, etc.
Way back in the day, when they first started using cotton mills, it threatened people’s jobs.
Not so much different from today, when everybody’s worried about robots taking all the jobs.
The robots of the Industrial Revolution were the cotton mills.
One guy could only turn so much raw cotton into fabric.
A machine could do it a thousand times more efficiently.
This is one of the unexpected costs of the Industrial Revolution.
Before the Industrial Revolution, technology changed very, very slowly.
If you were a farmer, your father was a farmer.
Going back plenty of generations.
Slow And Steady
This was the way it was for thousands of years.
Absent any societal collapses due to government mismanagement, life was pretty easy.
Slowly grow up, learn from your parents and other adults.
Cruise into adulthood, create more people, and then teach to your kids what you learned from your parents.
Easy peasy.
But the Industrial Revolution changed all that.
Technology has been changing ever since.
It worried people back in the 1800’s and it’s worrying people today.
Many skills are not transferable.
Some skills are.
You can imagine that skills are kind of on a spectrum.
The very, very translatable skills and abilities.
And the not so translatable ways.
Must Be Nimble
Like if all you can do is manually grow tomatoes, your going to get clobbered by a tomato growing robot.
And if that’s all you got on your resume (I can grow tomatoes!) you’re going to have issues.
But some skills are EXTREMELY translatable.
Like decent public speaking skills.
Decent communication and body language reading skills.
But there are kind of “meta-meta” skills.
Like being able to learn effectively.
Being able to remember effectively.
One way to think of humans is as learning machines.
To transfer skills down to the level of unconscious competence.
The more skills you can transfer to the level of unconscious competence, the more you can earn.
Skill Building Machine
And the more social skills you can transfer to the level of unconscious competence, the more love you’ll get.
One of the KEY meta skills is focus.
Learning requires taking new information from OUTSIDE of you, and putting it INSIDE of your brain.
If you can’t focus very strongly, or for a very long, learning anything will be tedious and frustrating.
But if you can focus clearly, strongly and for a long time, putting information into your mind body system will be much more enjoyable.
Much less frustrating.
Much more profitable.
So when YOU look out into the rapidly changing world, you won’t worry one bit.
You’ll just smile to yourself, inwardly, wondering what kind of cool things you’ll learn.
And all the cool things those new skills will get you.
