Homeless Hypnotist
I have this friend, who ended up locking himself in an insane asylum.
He used to live in a fairly bad neighborhood.
He meant to move, but he never really got around to it.
One way, he was walking home, and this homeless guy started talking to him.
Next thing he knew, he was hearing voices, and it had been an hour.
Talking Dummies
A common horror movie trope is a ventriloquist dummy.
Or another otherwise animate object that is possessed by some kind of demonic entity.
This idea has popped up in plenty of cultures since antiquity.
Once there was a stand up comedian.
He did well, but he never become ultra famous like he’d wanted.
Somebody Cut Me A Break
So near the end of his career, he thought he’d made a deal with the devil.
A few decades ago, there was this radio host who decided to broadcast from a haunted house.
A few murders had taken place, and so far, no family had managed to live there more than a year before fleeing in terror.
This Should Be Fun
So he started his broadcast like normal.
Made ghost and haunted house jokes like normal.
But then something changed.
It was still his own voice.
But the words he was using were different.
No Longer Fun
Captivating, but in a much different way.
And pretty soon, the people listening every night grew into the tens of millions.
But soon his ideas become completely chaotic and haphazard.
He was screaming about demons watching him.
Body Only
About how his mind had been hijacked and his words were a conduit for evil.
That the more you listen to these words, the more you risk going insane.
Suddenly he vanished.
His equipment was still there.
But no trace of his body.
No trace of him even being there.

Of course, the devil was more than happy to make an arrangement.
But being the father of lies, he didn’t hold up his end.
Instead, the comedian kept performing only in small clubs.
But his words and stories had the startling effect of driving his listerners insane.
Who Pulls Your Strings?
Perhaps we see ourselves as ventriloquist dummies.
That we don’t trust our minds to withstand much of anything.
That we secretly want to be controlled by other entities.
Perhaps his ancient trope is an equally ancient warning.
Straight Jacket
That if you don’t control your mind, somebody else will.
I visit him occasionally, but he’s rarely coherent.
He just mumbled about voices.
Voices that follow him everywhere.
