Lord Acton was a BAMF.
A dude who truly understood the human condition.
He’s the guy who came up with the famous, “Power corrupts, power corrupts absolutely.”
He also said something similar:
People will get as much power as circumstances allow.
And:
Nobody will vote for a self-denying ordinance.
This sort of matches with the idea that all humans are motivated by self interest.
Nobody will vote for anything that makes their lives worse off.
He also said that if man’s salary is based on NOT understanding something, there is NO WAY you can convince him of that something.
Another way to say this is that “everybody’s got a angle.”
Self Interested Humans
Everybody will always argue in favor of their own self interest.
Politicians tend to only see solutions to society’s problems that also give them more power and authority.
Which is why most solutions from politicians tend to make things worse.
A very common phrase that has been the source of plenty similar phrases is “red pill.”
This is from the Matrix.
And red pill metaphorically means to “see things the way they really are.”
Blue pill is to go back into a comfortable false world created by the matrix.
A similar truism is that people will much rather believe a comfortable lie (blue pill) than an uncomfortable truth (red pill).
But here’s the thing.
There Is No Pill
Is red pill REALLY the truth?
Everybody has their own version of the truth.
Our brains are NOT wired to seek truth.
Our brains are wired to look out into the world, and find as much benefit as we can.
A common tendency for people and organizations is to take credit for good things, and externalize bad things.
Or as they say about big corporations, they capitalize the gains, the socialize the losses.
If they make money, they keep it.
If they lose money, the beg the government for a bailout.
What the heck does all this have to do with anything?
It’s easy to stay on the sidelines.
Where there are a lot of people.
Misery Loves Company
Where it’s safe.
Where the “red pill” ideas not only keep you safely on the sidelines, but make you feel “enlightened” for NOT getting in the game.
How about THIS idea for a red pill:
Since the dawn of time, ladies were NEVER attracted to the “stay safely in the middle of the pack” guys.
Ladies were attracted to the top killers.
The dudes who DID NOT seek refuge in the safety of numbers.
In fact, the top dudes were often so preferred to the safety-in-numbers dudes that ALL the ladies would rather SHARE that top dude.
Sure, you can “go your own way” and not play the game.
Or you can play the game, and hope for some good results.
