Get Her!
Way back in high school, we read Julius Caesar.
And then we had to write an essay on the theme:
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
This saying has been around for a while.
Is it true?
It seems true.
When you don’t have any power, it’s pretty easy to imagine you would never corrupt.
But power fundamentally changes how you think about yourself and the world.
Consider this idea.
This model of beliefs.
Beliefs are a means to an end.
Meaning we belief things that will help us to get instinctively pleasing outcomes.
Food, sex, status, money, positive social validation, etc.
Socrates is famous for proving the none of our beliefs are true.
Way back in the hunter gather days, if one tribe had a goofy belief that couldn’t possibly be true, BUT it helped them survive, that goofy belief would be passed on.
Non Genetic Beliefs
Of course, beliefs themselves can’t be passed on.
But belief structures can.
Like imagine a tribe chasing after a wooly mammoth.
Supposed they believed, incorrectly, that once they got this wooly mammoth they would live happily ever after and never need to hunt again.
Absolutely false, but they believed it to be true.
This would make them much more motivated to kill that wooly mammoth.
This is one example of a belief structure that helps us survive.
This is how we more or less deceive ourselves.
Our ancient “on the spot” belief-generating process.
To convince ourselves is a good idea to go off our diet.
Or that it’s our spouses fault when we decide to cheat on them.
Beliefs, false, but created in the moment, to help us more congruently go after what we want.
Power can be the ultimate vicious cycle.
The more power we have, the more power we can get.
Power Craves Power
We can use power to get more power.
The more power we have, the higher up the food chain we are.
The higher up we go, the higher the stakes, the more ruthless we need to be.
Until we self destruct.
Absolute corruption.
Does this happen to everybody?
I don’t think so.
If you want power for power’s sake, pretty much.
But if you NEED power or high status to achieve something, then you’ll be OK.
Plenty of people had power over the centuries and have NOT corrupted.
Maybe because to them, there are far more important things in life than scrambling up the food chain.
Maybe this is also true about you.
That you aren’t so easily tempted by superficial power and status.
This only means there is MUCH more than you can accomplish.
