Five Years?
A common question you get in interviews is:
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I never really liked that question.
One, because I never had a five year plan that included the company I was applying for.
But mainly because my five year plans are nobody’s business.
Especially when I feel like my five year plan is part of an “audition” for a job.
Of course, I’ve always had a kind of reaction against people I don’t know asking me what I think are deeply personal questions.
One of the ancient “secrets” of magic is to know, to dare, to act, and to keep secret.
This matches well with the idea of keeping your most cherished long term goals to yourself.
Why?
Keep Secret
A goal represents something you DON’T have.
Something you very much WANT.
And as Napoleon Hill found, those who most achieved these big goals were people who had what he called a “burning desire.”
Not just a desire, or a strong desire.
But a BURNING desire.
One that you thought about when you fell asleep.
One that pops into your brain and launches you out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off, if you actually NEED an alarm.
Why keep this secret?
Depletion Of Energy
Two reasons.
One, suppose you tell somebody, somebody close to you, and they look at you like you’re CRAZY.
That opinion, from a friend or loved one, can be the seed of doubt that downgrades the “burning desire” into a regular desire or even a wish.
The second reason is they believe you will succeed.
And give you a TON of positive feedback.
That positive feedback feels good.
Which is kind of like snacking before dinner.
It makes you less hungry.
So you enjoy your dinner less, or you ruin your appetite.
That positive feedback kind of does the same thing.
It ruins your “burning desire” like a snack “ruins your appetite.”
Wait, What?
But there is a VERY POWERFUL way to “drop hints” about your biggest ambition.
If you wait around until somebody asks you, chances are you’ll be auditioning.
Like in job interviews, or trying to “impress people.”
But if you HAVE a burning desire, for even a vague outcome, it’s pretty easy to toss in some breadcrumbs into a conversation.
Just enough to let them (whoever they are) know that you HAVE a huge ambition.
Seeds Of Attraction
But not enough so they have any idea, what, specifically, that ambition is.
Which will make them wonder.
They’ll wonder for a lot of reasons.
One, few people have much ambition, let alone a defined one.
Two, is you’re not trying to impress them with your ambition.
Because it came up randomly and briefly during the conversation.
And this will put a seed in THEIR mind.
That will grow in a deep fascination about YOU.
