Sometimes doing new things is scary. Especially if we focus on a potential negative outcome.
For example, if you’re starting a new job, or promoting a new product, you might not know what to expect. If you focus on the potential negative outcomes, it can actually set up a self sustaining negative loop of failure.
Example, a guy goes to the bars to pick up girls. Before he even leaves his apartment, he imagines getting rejected. This puts him in a bad mood. He slumps his shoulders and wears a scowl. Because of his posture and his facial expressions, he gets rejected.
Self fulfilling prophecy.
Now he might have a better chance if he imagines success. But what if he’s never had success before? What if he just broke up with his ten year girl friend that he met in junior high school? It can be tough to imagine success in a particular area if you’ve never achieved it before.
Or can it?
One of the great things about NLP is you can give any meaning to pretty much anything. Just like you can reframe objections, you can also reframe events in the past, and give them any meaning you want.
Meaning that supports what you’re trying to achieve in your future.
Maybe this guy thinks back to a time he was walking down the street and he saw a girl smiling. He can reframe that to mean that his very presence was uplifting, and made others feel good to be around him.
Is this true? Who knows.
But if he spent a few minutes looking through his vast memory of events to find sufficient evidence that he was a natural player, and any girl would be lucky to be chosen by him, he’d likely find it.
The truth is that no matter what you’re trying to achieve, with enough creativity, you can go back into your past and find PROOF that you WILL succeed.
Try it out.
