Forget Needless Things
If you ever watch a professional, pivotal sports game, something kind of interesting happens.
At least for me.
Whenever there’s a time out, one of the key athletes will look up and study the scoreboard.
Or at least glance at it.
These dudes are getting paid millions of dollars.
Can’t they remember the score?
They get paid what they get paid BECAUSE they purposely DON’T remember the score, or even where they are in the game.
While they are playing, they VANISH everything expect the NOW moment.
Why do boxers have a whole team in the corner?
While they are trying to hit the other guy, and avoid getting hit, they are PURPOSELY not thinking about how many lefts the other guy has thrown and where they might be on points.
On the other hand, whenever I used to play any kind of “pick up” everybody could remember the score.
I Suck At Sports
But then again, I pretty much suck at “pick up sports” like basketball.
But if you keep practicing anything, you’ll get better.
For most sports, there is practice, and there is game time.
For most people like me, that suck at most sports, there is ONLY game time.
And game time isn’t to win, although it’s nice to win.
It’s to play.
Either with friends or strangers.
If you are competing for any reason, you’ll generally practice.
But practice also can be enjoyable.
If you need to play golf at work, you may go down to the driving range occasionally.
But then again, the driving range is fun on it’s own.
There is ZERO reason to worry about anything.
Have Fun Forget Score
At least for me, who gave up a long time ago trying to improve my horrific golfing ability.
So when I end up at the driving range with one or two friends, I just play.
My friends (guys who don’t suck) practice short game, long game, etc.
Me?
I tee them up and smack them as hard as a possibly can.
But when playing for real, I’m pretty nervous.
NOT like those professionals who can push EVERYTHING out of their mind while playing.
But sports is something you NEED to practice.
Every professional sports player HAD to go through a learning curve.
But everyday, normal human behavior?
Not so much.
Things like talking and sharing stories and anecdotes is something EVERYBODY knows how to do.
So when we are in the moment with friends, we need to do what the pro’s do during sports.
Pause to check the time, if we need to be somewhere.
Natural Flow State
Because flowing in the moment while talking to friends is the EASIEST way to lose time.
But flowing with gorgeous, famous or rich people?
You ALREADY know how to have a fun, engaging back and forth conversation.
You ALREADY know how to tell jokes and silly stories.
Unless you are world famous, straight A student, you already KNOW how to forget things.
So why not forget the outcome, and the time, and fire away as playfully as you can like I do on the driving range?
