Never See It Coming
It’s common for large companies to keep their employees in the dark as long as possible before any large layoffs.
They want to keep them from knowing so they can get a maximum amount of productivity out of them.
Individually, this is much easier to manage.
God vs. Free Will
A common problem with the idea of God is that of free will.
How is it possible for God to know everything we are going to do, including all our choices, while we still can have free will?
One argument is that we do have choice, without our own context and understanding, but God has a frame of reference that we simply cannot understand with our human brains.
Conspiracy Origins
A very common conspiracy theme is that the Government knows certain things they will never allow the public to know.
This is usually done under the guise of national security, but this contradicts history.
Governments tend to hoard power and wealth not only from their neighbors, but from their own citizens.
This tends to accelerate as societies tend toward collapse.
Alien Overlords
There is a theory from anthropology that the molecules that seeded life were sent here from extra-terrestrial origins.
And that there are intelligent entities in the universe much, much more advanced than we can possibly contemplate.
And they keep track of the various planets they’ve seeded, very much like a farmer would keep track of new and experimental seeds.
The theory goes that way back around the time when humans co-existed with Neanderthals, they decided we were a failed experiment.
So they inserted, and have continued to keep, various alien entities among the upper echelons of society to keep us from breaking through to the next level of scientific understanding.
Upper Limit of Knowledge
So long as current understandings of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics are the upper bound of our scientific understandings, we won’t be a threat to any other intelligent species.
But if we ever learn to apply quantum tunneling on a large scale, to bypass the limits of Relativity, that would present a problem.
So anytime we get close, our invisible alien overlords keep us from discovering anything that would represent a jump in human scientific understanding.
Only Sort of Makes Sense
While the surface description of this is believable, it’s almost always much more similar to a marketing story.
That the government exists to protect us.
Where, in reality, we exist to only help the select few within the government so they can maximize their concentration of wealth and power.
Traffic Copters
A common argument is the helicopter traffic model.
That you, driving on the freeway, believe you have free will.
Free will to choose which exist to take, or to remain on the highway.
But a traffic helicopter would know about a wreck a few miles up, and from this higher frame of reference, he would know what is going to happen to you, even though you still have free will.
Whenever you see something in the news about a huge layoff, you can bet that all the people getting fired didn’t know it was coming.
