Power Battle
Once, a long time ago, I worked in a lab.
A lab that served two departments.
One was the research and development department.
To do experiments to come up with new products.
The other was manufacturing.
We had to do destructive testing on a certain percentage of products.
To verify that they operated the way they were supposed to.
And this create an upper management conflict.
The Research and Development Department vs. The Regulatory Department.
The regulatory people had to make sure we were compliant with the kajillion rules and laws of the FDA.
The R&D department just wanted to run experiments to see what kind of cool products we could create and sell.
One side was very creative and unconstrained.
The other side was very, “follow every rule.”
This create an interesting turf war.
Both wanted complete control over the lab.
But one time, the lady in charge of the regulatory part impressed me.
She impressed me with her ninja fast thinking and metaphor game.
Metaphor Ninja
We had done something for her, in a pinch, that she needed for a very important meeting.
She came into our lab right when we finished.
I handed her the results.
She checked the numbers and immediately said:
“You guys are walking on water down here!”
Which I immediately suspected as false praise.
But what happened next is what really impressed me, even though it was more false praise.
She turned around to leave, and saw another lab person.
This lab person was Jewish.
She knew he was Jewish.
Without missing a beat, without even breaking her verbal game, she repeated her praise.
Targeted Praise
But she said:
“Manna from heaven!”
What is so impressive?
Walking on water is a metaphor from the new testament.
Jesus walking on water.
Manna from heaven is a metaphor from the old testament.
When they Jews were escaping Egypt.
And the found a bunch of manna from heaven that they could eat and keep escaping across the desert.
Now, coming down and saying, “Walking on water” is pretty easy.
It’s a common metaphor and a useful way to compliment somebody’s skill.
But as soon as she saw the Jewish person, she IMMEDIATELY (and I mean immediately) used a metaphor from the old testament.
Now, at this company, pretty much EVERYBODY didn’t trust this lady.
She was not a genuine leader.
She was, even within her own department, recognized as purely interested in more and more power.
Develop Real Power
This is how false power operates.
False praise, very subtle but effective manipulation.
Most people with power today are like that.
Which is why people are starved for REAL power.
Genuine power.
Power that derives is authority from genuine respect and admiration from the people that power serves.
Develop THIS kind of power, and you’ll be admired, respected, and adored.
