Easy Peasy
Suppose your neighbor came over one day, in a panic.
She had a sudden and unexpected problem.
A MASSIVE problem.
She got called into work and HAD to go.
A problem only SHE could solve.
Otherwise, planetary mayhem would ensue.
Maybe there was an asteroid about to kill the Earth and she was the ONLY one who could re-calibrate the anti-asteroid lasers or something.
BUT, she had a house full of kids.
A TV party or something.
And you only have ONE JOB.
You have to make sure the kids eat SOMETHING while watching TV.
Cleaning is not an issue.
And these metaphorical kids in this goofy story are perfectly, well behaved kids.
But ONLY if they can eat something, ANYTHING, while watching TV.
And they have to ENJOY eating it.
This is NOT a “clean your plate!” kind of situation.
Happy Eating
This is where you bring out the food, and they jump up and down with childhood happiness.
So, here’s the question.
You look in the kitchen.
And you really only find two kinds of food.
The kind that would go into the “ice cream and cookies” category.
And the kind that would go into the “carrots and cauliflower” category.
Remember, the ONLY task would is to get them to EAT something, anything.
And ENJOY eating that.
Would this be a difficult choice?
Would you be conflicted, remembering all those times as a kid you LOVED to eat raw cauliflower?
No, that would be silly.
This would be an absolute NO BRAINER.
Ice cream, cookies, chips, cake, etc.
You would be the TV HERO!
Now for the mystery question.
You’ve never seen these kids before.
You’ve never interacted with them before.
Easy Prediction
Up until now, you didn’t even know that asteroid lady even HAD kids.
So how in the world, did you know they’d rather have ice cream than cauliflower?
Do you have some kind of telepathy?
Do you have some kind of mental future projection powers?
No.
You are a normal human.
You know that kids would generally prefer ice cream to carrots.
All normal humans would see this “choice” as a no brainer.
But here’s the BEST part.
All humans are like those kids.
Grown Up Kids
Sure we’re adults, so our thinking is a bit more complex.
But given the same choices, we’d ALL CHOOSE the same options.
Just as naturally and automatic as kids would choose ice cream over carrots.
The problem is our ideas about what they want get in the way of how EASY it is to understand what they want.
When you gave the ice cream to the kids, you didn’t need to take time to explain why YOU thought they SHOULD eat the ice cream.
But as adults, we seem to feel a need to do this.
To explain to others why we THINK they SHOULD do what we want.
Ditch this thinking.
Give the what they want.
And they will love you for it.
