Old School
One of Adam Smith’s famous lines is about enlightened selfishness.
The butcher, baker, etc. don’t do what they do because of benevolence.
They do so out of self interest.
Not steal things from other people self interest.
But stable, long lasting, mutual benefit self interest.
I, for example, like bacon.
So when I go the supermarket I’ll buy some bacon.
And when I pay for the bacon, I’m happy.
I work and get money.
I take the money and buy the stuff I want.
One time an economist-journalist type guy wanted to do an experiment.
He wanted to make a toaster, from scratch.
Not from a toaster kit.
Impossible From Scratch
But actually create ALL the elements of the toaster.
Like find the ore, smelt the metal, figure out how to make the plastic and the copper for the wire, etc.
Needless to say, he gave up pretty quickly.
Way back in the fifties, a guy wrote an essay called, “I, Pencil.”
Which was about the absolutely massive complexity that goes into making a pencil.
The wood from one part of the world.
The graphite from another part.
The rubber for the eraser from another part.
The metal to hold the eraser from another part.
The paint from another part.
All of these smaller parts were made by companies and organizations.
Some people go to work, chop down trees and process the wood.
They get paid for doing that.
Unbelievable Complexity
Similar, all the other parts are made like that.
People going to work, making stuff and getting paid.
And each person that gets paid, uses that money to buy stuff.
The stuff they want.
And all THAT stuff is also made by people all over the world.
A MASSIVELY complex system.
Far, far too complex for any ONE person to even UNDERSTAND, let alone be in control of.
This is an example of an “emergent” system.
A system that kind of “pops up” based all the individual components.
Money flowing around the world one way.
Goods flowing around the world the other way.
Everybody acting with “Adam Smith” enlightened self interest.
The MAIN REASON people go to work is to get paid.
To get money to buy the things they need and want.
All made by other people who go to work to get paid.
A massively beautiful and complex system.
Universal Winner
They say that a human society is THE most complex emergent system in the entire universe.
Maybe.
There is another emergent complex system.
AT LEAST one.
Maybe more.
What is this?
Your brain.
100 billion neurons hooked together.
To create self awareness.
An unknown mystery.
Maybe now, maybe forever.
But each brain is part of this larger emergent complex system of global commerce.
But suppose it keeps getting more and more complex?
It’s just that the most WE can understand is our brains and our own planet.
What if there are INFINITELY more levels of complexity?
Of higher and higher levels of emergence?
What happens then?
