Um… What?
Human memory is very faulty.
If a crime allegedly happens, and all they have are eyewitnesses, they won’t prosecute.
It’s very difficult to prosecute something ONLY because somebody said they saw him do this.
Sure, there are exceptions, but these are the exceptions that prove the rule.
Imagine if you were the witness.
The only witness to a crime.
And the defense were to cross-examine you.
All he would need to do is demonstrate to the jury your memory is less than perfect.
So, imagine he pulled up all the tests you’d ever taken.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. This evidence PROVES that the witness has a history of trying and failing to remember things!”
Every time you got less than an A on any test would be an example.
Of being told what to remember, and still not being able to remember.
Masters Of Memory
Doctors, for example, are considered (at least some of them) as authority figures.
At the very least, if you met somebody at a party, and they said they were a doctor, most of us would be impressed.
Because to BE a doctor you have to memorize a TON of stuff.
And them demonstrate that knowledge through some kind of internship.
Where all you have is the situation in front of you, and a brain filled with all the stuff you learned and memorized through medical school.
We all know how hard it is to remember things.
We all know how easy it is to forget things.
Names, numbers, shopping lists, you name it, we’ve forgotten it.
This is why eyewitness testimony is pretty useless when it comes to putting a criminal in jail.
They need evidence, or a confession, or a TON of corroborating witnesses.
Because when crimes happen, they are UNEXPECTED.
Remembering things that happened unexpectedly is a kajillion times harder than remembering a name or a bunch of body parts you PLANNED to remember.
No Idea
A thief comes into a college lecture, and grabs something off the desk.
Everybody remembers the “guy” differently.
And guess what?
Your life is a NEVER ENDING series of unexpected events.
Events you can’t POSSIBLY remember very accurately.
And your self identity, how you see yourself, is made up by the TOTAL of the meaning you give to these events.
All the unexpected events you can’t possibly remember very accurately.
What does this mean?
Who you ARE is really only a guess.
A guess that tends to verify itself.
You have an idea that defines who you are.
And that creates the filters through which you see the world.
Self Identity?
Which verifies this very likely FALSE idea about yourself.
Change your filters, change how you define yourself.
To BECOME anybody you want to.
