Co Evolution
Adam Smith once described something very important.
Paraphrased, it is the butcher the baker and the brewer don’t get up at the crack of dawn because they are concerned about us.
They do that to make the best possible stuff, so we’ll pay for it.
Little kids are taught that the job of the baker is to make bread for people so they can have something to eat.
This creates of an image of a guy getting up and making bread because that’s just what he’s “supposed to do.”
This is absolutely incorrect.
He wants our money.
He knows that a lot of other bakers are out there who also want our money.
He gets up and bakes bread so “we” will CHOOSE him to buy our bread from.
We’ll give him our money, and in exchange get some bread.
This is often described as “enlightened selfishness.”
Or “overlapping selfishness.”
Free Exchange
The selfish part is him wanting money.
His goal is to get our money.
But the means to that end is to be as SELFLESS as possible.
He has to ONLY care about the kind of bread that WE want.
If he tried to sell us the kind of bread that HE likes, or he “thinks” we should want, he’d go out of business.
But he knows that if he FIRST focuses on OUR wants and desires, that will lead to us giving him money in exchange for what we want.
Unfortunately, a lot of people believe ONLY that “other people” SHOULD do certain things.
This is a horrible mindset.
Because it doesn’t work.
All Selfish
NOBODY on earth behaves the way they do because OTHER PEOPLE think they “should” behave a certain way.
EVERYBODY behaves in their own self interests.
Even if they’ve got a gun to their head.
Do what this guy says, or get shot in the head.
NOT getting shot in the head satisfies their own self interest.
Understanding this dynamic makes everything SO much simpler.
If you have an idea of what other people “should” do, and they don’t do it, life is frustrating and complicated.
Conversational Economics
But if you LEAD your behaviors with figuring out what other people want, the rest will take care of themselves.
Just like the breadmaker. If he makes the BEST bread in down, by focusing on OTHER PEOPLE’S desires, there will ALWAYS be a line of people outside his shop.
Focus on other people’s desires conversationally, and you’ll always have a line of people wanting to be with you.
