Simple Strategy
Children have a very useful strategy when it comes to investigating the contents of chocolate that looks good on the outside, but they can’t tell what’s on the inside.
The idea is pretty simple.
Take a small bite, and if you like what’s inside, you keep eating, if you don’t like what’s inside, put it back.
What’s On The Inside
Similarly, this is a very useful technique when meeting people whom look very good on the outside, but you don’t know what’s on the inside.
You start a conversation with them, and see what’s on the inside.
If you like what’s on the inside, you keep talking.
If you don’t like what’s on the inside, you put them back.
Rich Bike Rider
I used to see this old guy occasionally when I would go long bike rides.
He was wealthy, and retired, and we’d hang out at the coffee shop at the beach.
His hobby was treasure hunting.
He would research ships that had sunk, and would calculate where they might be, and whether they would have treasure or not.
Treated Like A Business
If it seemed profitable, he’d hire some people to go looking around the bottom of the ocean.
My friend bought this house a couple years ago.
He’s pretty weird.
He’s in his mid thirties, and made a few hundred million by starting up and selling a few tech companies.
Secret Cave Network
The guy who built the house a couple hundred years ago was an occultist.
He purposely built it on top of a large network of natural caves.
Nobody knows why, or what he did, but my friend said he’d found out the reason.
At first, he went exploring in these caves with a whole lot of gear.
Full Of Supplies
A huge rock climbing pack with food, water, weapons, flashlights and a ton of extra batteries.
The first time he went in, he was only gone for a couple of days.
When he came out, he seemed really excited, but he didn’t say what happened.
The second time he went in, he didn’t bring any gear at all.
Not even a flashlight.
Mysterious Survival
This time he was gone for a week.
He came back out a week later, and he seemed really, really excited.
Like he had experienced something magnificent.
Almost like he was a different person.
Dude, What Happened?
He wouldn’t explain how he stayed alive without any food or water.
The next time he was gone for six months.
He didn’t bring any food or water or gear.
A New Man
But when he came out, he seemed perfectly healthy.
His personality was different.
I asked him what had happened, how he could be gone so long without needing food or water.
He only smiled and said it was not possible to explain in words.
The Surface Is Misleading
There is much more than you can see, he said.
Much more than you can imagine.
Much more than you can dream of.
He hasn’t been in there since.
Sits and Waits
He just sits in his chair, staring at his front door.
He never eats, he never sleeps, he just sits and looks.
He always has a smile on his face.
Like he is waiting for something huge to happen.
The State Always Wants A Cut
My cycling friend is in the middle of a lawsuit with the state of Oregon.
He found a sunken ship off the coast, and it had tons of treasure.
As soon as they brought it up, the state liked to claim it.
He said this is the biggest problem with being a professional treasure hunter.
Keep It Secret
As soon as you find some, the government will do anything to take it.
Some people are so desperate for a relationship they don’t care what’s on the inside.
They outside is so good, it more than compensates with the negative stuff on the inside.
Short Term Happiness
But once the outside becomes familiar, and all you are left with is the insides, this can create a lot of grief.
Which is why many relationships today are filled with agony and regret.
Sometimes when we were kids we’d dare somebody to take a chocolate, with an unknown inside, and put the whole thing in your mouth.
Chew It All Up
And you’d have to chew it and swallow it no matter what was on the inside.
Even if it had gross stuff like coconut mixed with cricket based protein powder.
