Name The Demon
A common theme in demon movies is getting the demon’s name.
According to common demon lore, once you know the demon’s name, you have power over the demon.
Why is this?
Who knows.
But the metaphor is kind if simple.
If you don’t know the demons name, you don’t know who he is.
He’s a mysterious character doing evil deeds.
But once you know his name, he can’t hide any more.
You who he is, his background, his strengths and weaknesses.
He can no longer hide his nature.
Once you know his nature, you can kill him.
Or exorcise him or whatever.
Metaphorical Obstacles
All ancient monster stories are metaphors for us humans.
They represent obstacles we face.
The “monsters” we need to kill to survive.
The bigger the animal, the more the food, and the greater the rewards.
Status, recognition, admiration and sex.
But the bigger the animal, the more dangerous it was.
I saw a video the other day of a buffalo vs. an elephant.
The buffalo tried to go head to head.
The elephant lowered his head, impaled the buffalo on one of his tusks, and flung him away like a rag doll.
There used to tons of wooly mammoths.
Then they disappeared.
Why?
Super Delicious
We ate them.
One theory postulates that one of the main reasons for human migration was to follow the big game.
The bigger the kill, the bigger the rewards.
The bigger the potential kill, the bigger the dangers.
These dangers exist as fears and imaginary monsters.
Ancient stories were motivational tools to inspire young men to go out and be the best killers they could be.
To kill the demons on the inside, so they could kill the demons on the outside.
This is a necessary part of the hero’s journey.
There is usually a scene where the here is supposed to go inside an enclosed space and face off against his most terrifying inner demons.
Once the inner demons are taken care of, the outer “demons” are easy.
Who We Are
This is part of our nature.
To be demon hunters.
To relentlessly slay all the metaphorical demons we can find.
And just like way back in ancient history, the bigger the demon, the bigger rewards.
Money, fame, social recognition, status and plenty of opportunities for sex.
So what are you waiting for?
Sharpen your spear and get to work.
