Surprise!
Once I went to dinner with a friend.
I ordered a scotch on the rocks.
While I was waiting, the waitress brought me a glass of water.
Or, a glass of what I thought was water.
But it was gin.
Pure gin over ice.
Taking that first sip was horrific.
I was expecting water, and I got gin.
I didn’t waste any time flagging down the waitress.
She apologized and brought me some water.
Once I went to McDonalds.
I ordered a bacon cheeseburger.
I got my cheeseburger but it didn’t have any bacon.
Where’s My Bacon
I didn’t waste any time asking for my bacon.
She apologized and gave me my bacon.
Once I went to see a movie.
I ordered my ticket.
The lady said, “Sorry, but we’re sold out.”
I said, “Wow. Thanks anyway.”
Once I went to the hardware store.
I was looking for a special kind of plug.
With a switch to turn it off, so I wouldn’t have to plug it in and unplug it all the time.
Sorry, Don’t Have It
The lady listened to me patiently, helped me look, but concluded they didn’t have anything like that.
I said, “Wow. Thanks anyway.”
What do these have in common?
Well, they are all very common experiences.
(Except for maybe the gin-water switcharoo…)
Most people can handle things like this.
Ask for what you want.
Get what you want.
Somebody makes a mistake.
You point this out and they fix the mistake.
Ask for what you want, and they say, “Sorry, we don’t have that.”
All of these include exchange.
Easy Trade?
Products for money.
Two strangers trading things.
This is the basic premise of life.
Meet a stranger, trade what you have for what they have.
Skills, stuff, whatever.
Sometimes there are mistakes.
Sometimes they are out of what you want.
No biggie.
Life is made up of these simple exchanges.
Trade Your Way Rich
Between now and your ideal life in a decade, there will be tens of thousands of these simple, daily exchanges.
Only some of them are hard, for some reason.
What’s the reason?
We all have memories of being kids.
Of asking for something and getting yelled out.
We are all gun shy.
We all have a bit of social anxiety.
Of asking for what we want, and getting yelled out.
How! Dare! You!
HOW DARE YOU THINK YOU DESERVE THAT!!!!
This is the deep, unconscious fear we all carry.
But it’s only imaginary.
It doesn’t exist any more.
So, get rid of it, and get on with life.
