Shoe Repair
There is this old shoe repair shop in my neighborhood. The dude that runs the place is in his late seventies.
His son, who’s in his forties is going to take over I guess when he dies.
I saw this PBS documentary on YouTube. It started out as a human interest story of somebody who was financially destroyed during the panic of ’08.
But she wrote a book and how she’s famous for being poor. She even gave a TED talk about what it’s like to be poor.
Famous For Being Poor
I guess you can be famous for being poor but being poor can’t make you rich, which sort of sucks.
There’s a lot news report that try and paint a picture of some strange collection of seemingly opposite events.
They say things like despite how booming the economy is, people are still poor and have to live in their cars.
Booming According To Whom?
But when they say booming economy, they always cite the same government statistics, namely the unemployment rate and the GDP expansion.
Both of which nobody believes.
There’s this old guy in the park I talk to. He has four shops in town, and despite the economic collapse, this guy is still raking in mad cash.
He finally told me his secret. It started a long time ago when he and his then wife got interested in the occult. In black magic. In the dark arts.
Black Magic Business
They both wanted to know a little bit to help with business.
But his wife, now is ex wife, got in really deep. She decided to forget about money.
She decided to embrace dark energy.
She found that allowing her mind body system as vessel for dark energy was much more fulfilling then making money.
Dark Energy Love
That letting dark energy flow through your body is better than sex.
That letting dark energy flow through your body is better than being rich.
That letting dark energy flow through your body is better than being famous.
He ditched her and only learned enough for his businesses to take off.
Turns out of you combine the tinctures of some very esoteric plants, it will create a very vague but subconscious buying desire.
He only needs to create this smell in his shops and people buy his stuff.
Legit Products Only
He can’t just sell anything. He’s got to sell legitimate products. But people would rather buy them in his shop, even if they are more expensive, than buy them online.
If you have two, ten hour per week jobs, you are considered employed.
If you give up looking for work, you are not considered unemployed.
If they calculated the unemployment rate like they did in the 80’s, it would be around twenty percent.
The Homeless Don’t Count
All the homeless people you see are not counted as unemployed.
All the people on permanent disability, welfare, or are otherwise out of work but not working are not considered unemployed.
The include government spending in GPD growth.
Debt Based Growth
And since half of government spending is debt that will never be paid back, that’s kind of a sketchy way to count as growth.
That would be like spending money on your credit cards and counting it as part of your income.
The lady had a high paying job and a fat 401(k). But she quit her job and cashed out her entire 401(k) to start a business.
Then it failed. Then the panic of ’08 happened.
They showed her business on PBS, and it didn’t look like a business that would have been successful even in a good economy.
Everything Must Fail
The dude at the shoe store said something happened after Vietnam. The country went broke, and had to switch from society based on production to a society based on consumption.
Before that, everything that was made was made to last. Now everything that’s made is made to wear out within a year or two.
Most of the shoes this guy fixes are really old.
Old Better Than New
That’s why he said old things were built to last.
New things, including ideas and jobs and everything else, are built to wear out every couple of years.
