A lot of people like to think about life like a magic vending machine.
You put in the money, make your choice and get the bag of chips.
This is why guys can get so frustrated when it comes to dating.
Particularly nowadays.
Before the internet, you were forced to learn stuff by trial and error.
Since the dawn of time, people had no other choice but to learn stuff by trial and error.
But today it seems legitimate to read a bunch of strategies online about how to deal with people.
What to say to get them to do what you want.
The vending machine model.
This isn’t helped by the oldest political lie of all time:
“Your problems aren’t your fault.
They are those other people’s fault.
Vote for me and I’ll fix it.”
Zero Agency
This creates a idea that there is a certain collection of behaviors other people “should” do.
The problems in the world are other people not doing what they “should” do.
So when you try those internet-based sure-fire pick up techniques, and they don’t work, the response isn’t helpful.
The common response to a failed attempt is “they” aren’t behaving the way “they” are supposed to.
Back before the internet, the response was much different:
“Hmm, that didn’t work.
Maybe I should try something else.”
And people kept trying other things until they figured it out.
This is still very possible today.
If you forget about magic tricks and sure fire lines, you’ll EASILY be able to figure out what to say and do to get people to do what you want.
People are very, very similar on the inside.
It’s hard to see this today because everybody is trying to run game on everybody else.
Who Are You?
Nobody is really connecting.
Few people take the time to simply find out about other people.
The only time we approach this is when we WANT something.
And then our behavior is seen as a means to an end.
Failed vending machine strategies.
Not a legitimate, old school, human interpersonal experience.
A genuine experience only for the sake of interacting with another human.
If only to find they have the same struggles we do.
The same hopes we do.
The same obstacles we do.
Open up yourself to the true nature of others, and you’ll find THEY are very much the same as YOU.
Which will open a deep communication not experienced by many people.
